There is one game for the fate of the world. You can take anybody out there as your starting pitcher. Current form counts, but if a guy is on the DL, you can select him based on his previous form. Who do you take.

    My shortlist would be:

    Mulder
    Santanna
    Schmidt
    R. Johnson
    Clemens (ugh)

From that list - I gotta go with Schmidt over (just barely) Mulder. The fucker is nails.

Current form... Randy Johnson with Defense behind him... but if I can select anyone I take Nolan Ryan in his prime.

We can expand it to anytime in anoter thread, but Ryan ain't even in the top 5 of that list and probably not even in the top 10.

probably not. he was a great pitcher no doubt...dominant. but on top of the 324 wins, he also lost 292 times. to go along with his 5700+ strikeouts, he also walked almost 2800.

back on topic...right now, i take Jason Schmidt.

    Right now - Schmidt.

    No contest.

Recent history? Schilling was a beast a couple years ago, and of course Rocket & Randy. As dominating as Pedro Martinez was, I dunno. Same with all the Braves pitchers.

    All time?

Bob Gibson, 'cause he threw inside more than Pedro has ever dreamed of ("get the fuck off MY plate!"), had an insanely low ERA, and was one of the meanest SOB's to ever take the mound.

Screw it - we can expland it to both now and ever.

In their prime, off the top of my head, I can name 9 who blow Ryan away.

    Steve Carlton
    Sandy Koufax
    Tom Seaver
    Bob Gibson
    Greg Maddux
    Randy Johnson
    Pedro Martinez
    Roger Clemens (ugh)
    Herschiser

And that is just guys from the past 35 years or so. I am sure that guys like Spahn, Feller, Matthewson, and Cy Young get thrown in there somewhere.
