    Emeka Okafor

Okafor wins NBA Rookie of the Year

    RICK BONNELL

    Staff Writer

Charlotte Bobcats rookie Emeka Okafor will be named the NBA's rookie of the year tomorrow, the Charlotte Observer has learned.

Sources confirmed that Okafor won a close race against Chicago Bulls' Ben Gordon in media voting held over the last month. The Bobcats will host a press conference Wendesday afternoon to make the formal presentation.

    Okafor, a 6-10, 255-pound forward, was the franchise's first-ever draft pick.

Okafor led all NBA rookies in scoring (15.1 points per game), rebounding (10.9 per game) and minutes played. His 47 double-doubles over the season were fourth most in the NBA.

He deserved it. Class act and hard worker. I can't wait to see how good he can be with some talent around him. Next year should be fun with Okafor and 2 lottery picks. Young team with some promise

47 double doubles. That's 4th behind Garnett, Marion and Nash - though Nash was points/assists.

I'm waiting for year 3 of the franchise. I'll start having some expectations of the team at that point.
