my point is this....we could at least have a fucking playoff system...16 teams, 8 teams, hell start with 4, but please....fuck. why in the hell do we STILL live in the t-model days where sports writers DECIDE who plays for the national title. why in the fuck is D1 football the ONLY sport that has no tournament format to decide their champion? and i get sick of these dumbass bowl appologists trying to tell us why this fucked up BCS bowl format is the best way to go. its bull shit. they could at least admit that the big payoffs are the real reason that we have to keep dealing with this farce that is the bowl system and the BCS.

    FUCK!

There are 3 years left in the BCS deal with Fox. I think that we may see 4 teams in conjuntion with 4 bowl games in a playoff. Even that will not hapen before the 2010 season.

Because not everyone is as big a moron as you are.

#1) Playoffs would involve more games and therefore generate MORE money, not less. A half-brained monkey could have figured that out, but apparently you had never considered it and thus you never realized that what you assumed was the biggest reason against a playoff actually had nothing to do with anything.

#2) Playoff systems absolutely do not guarantee that they'll crown the "best team," and judging by the NCAA tournament you could easily argue that it rarely does. The smaller the playoff pool the better chance you have, but it still introduces a lot of uncertainty into the equation. Playoffs are about entertaining fans, not about legitimately finding out which team is the best. Football is already about match-ups, such that a team clearly inferior in the grand scheme of things may still have a natural advantage over them because they match-up particularly well. Is N.C. State annually better than Florida State? No. Is Ohio State as bad as they looked last night against Florida? Of course not, it was just a bad match-up for them. Maybe Michigan would wax Florida and then where would we be in terms of determining who was actually the best team?

#3) Playoff systems completely devalue the regular season aside from rivalries. Does it matter that Ohio State lost to Florida in basketball? No. Regular season ratings for college basketball suck balls because there is no emotional investment. If your team loses, it doesn't mean much. Meanwhile in college football you can't even ignore your favorite team versus Central Michigan because there is drama in every week and just one slip up can derail a season. Hell, how many college basketball fans even care about conference titles anymore? UNC seemingly hasn't won in a decade, but it doesn't even matter because the NCAA tournament and the rivalry games are the only things that matter in the entire college basketball season.

#4) Playoff systems mean that every participating school ends their season with a loss except one. Would Boise State's win over Oklahoma be a Cinderella story and mean so much to them if they just turned around the next week and got waxed by USC in the next round of the playoffs?

#5) Playoff systems would not end the controversy. Would Boise State have been included in the playoff pool? How about LSU? USC? Some "deserving" team would still get left out and it's impossible to say that those teams (especially the latter two) couldn't get hot and beat everyone else. What if the eventual winner was a 10-2 team while an undefeated team like OSU only lost once in those playoffs (especially if it wasn't to the 10-2 team)? The only thing we'd know from a playoff system is who the "better team" was on each particular day. The current system does a much better job of telling us who was the best over the course of the entire season.

    51 & 37 days

When you think about how crazy it is compared to all other sports: The NCAA Div 1A football decides its NATIONAL CHAMPION with two teams in a single game after one team had not played a game in 51 days and the other team had not played in 37 days.

These arguments are similar to the ones used to disparage challenges/reviews in football - the "it's not perfect" argument.

    Which is true.

But the "Option 2 is not perfect" argument holds little water so as long as option 2 is better than option 1.

The basketball players and lower division football players seem to be handling that OK.

I guess I just don't care who the theoretical best team is I care about which team proves itself on the field against the theoretical best teams.

I'm pointing out major flaws in the proposed playoff system. People whining about the BCS is an example of the "it's not perfect" argument. After all, is there really anything that wrong with the current system? No, people just like bitching a lot more than they like actually thinking about an issue.

They already do, only in the current system the regular season games actually count. If South Carolina had made that field goal, Florida would not have been playing for a national championship. In a playoff system it wouldn't have mattered. OSU beating Michigan actually meant something. In a playoff system it wouldn't have mattered. UCLA beating USC on the last regular season weekend was huge, but in a playoff system it wouldn't have mattered. The teams do have to prove themselves on the field every week of the season.
It's natural to wonder how Boise would do against a team like Florida, but again I go back to what that Fiesta Bowl would mean to BSU fans if they just got waxed in the next round of a theoretical playoff.

Have you watched them after the games? They're devastated. Pretty much every team and every player feels like a failure at the end except the champion. Carolina had a killer team in '98, but did that mean anything at all after they lost to Utah in the semi-finals? Not to me, and I'd imagine it didn't to them either. I'm sure Boise State players would love a shot at Florida, but I'm also sure that they feel pretty awesome about their win right now and wouldn't if they went on to get crushed this weekend.

A playoff /tournament in D1 football would be bigger than the basketball tournament. It would generate huge money and ratings. The regular season games would still matter because that is how they would be ranked to get into the tournament and how they were seeded once there.

    It would be huge.
