Whether or not we should re-sign McCree is something we can legitimately disagree about. You suggesting that using two strong safeties is why were better against the run is stupid and wrong.

I also am completely unqualified, but it is more of a lack of football expertise combined with flasking into Georgia Tech games each weekend which seem like a good idea at the time, but greatly lower my credibility when it comes to prospective draft talk other than what I read and the little that I remember from Saturdays in the Fall. Oh well, you only get 4-5 years of that. :satana:

GT normally has a pretty good defense. I thought some of their linebackers looked active, if a little small. Anyway, please feel free to share your thoughts about anyone you've seen. I'm not going to rip anyone for an opinion about Simpson since I haven't seen him. Hopefully I wouldn't rip people anyway since there's so much subjectivity in projecting any college player.

There's evidence of that, the only problem is that it has to happen when he's actually outraged. He isn't at this time.

As for his point, almost by definition when we're stopping the run well, you're not going to get RBs getting 7 or more yards past the LOS.

Maybe Thelt was referring to the effectiveness of putting a safety in the box? Just sayin'.

*shrug* Who knows what he was thinking, but in regards to walking up a safety, teams generally feel much more comfortable in doing so when they have a genuine free safety playing centerfield rather than having another strong safety with coverage limitations. That may or may not be why we didn't walk the safety up much this year except against Atlanta, although I think that had as much to do with the front seven getting the job done against the run as anything else.

Is it that hard to find a decent free safety? What am I missing in thinking you could convert a decent college corner into a FS ?

The skills are similar, but awareness is as important as anything for a FS and that's something you don't just pick up. A lot of guys with subpar speed have been great free safeties (and ballhawks) by recognizing where the ball is most likely to go. Sammy Knight is a great example of that, as he basically shouldn't be playing in the NFL physically, but he always finds the right spot. As such, it's very possible for a corner to make the transition but you just don't know if he'll have the feel for it.

Oh, and no it's not terribly hard. Lance Shulters was out there and available, but to my knowledge we didn't even contact him before he signed with Miami after being released by Tennessee. He didn't sign for much either.

That is a sore spot for me. I really wanted him here.

And if we'd signed him here, we woulda won that Miami game, gotten home field and probably a bye, and right now we'd be goin' to the Super Bowl!:banginghe

    Maybe.
