what is duante culpepper's status next year? I think either him or moss will be gone fron the vikes next year. those 2 are like oil and water.

    >> we have to go out and get a top quarterback, and probably a more able vet like Brad Johnson or Doug Johnson

could we afford both, a top QB and a quality vet backup?

    >> I don't want to ruin another QB before he's had the chance to develop

the assumption there, and i think it's a bad one, is that weinke would have developed. or, are you talking about collins, lewis and/or craig? but i agree, i have seen young QBs before get so beat up physically while the team was a mess in process that they could hardly move by the team improved.

    It won't be Culpepper leaving.

We don't have many moves to make outside the draft. Signing Johnson to a short term $2-3 million deal to start is better than attempting to get by with Peete another year. We're going to have to pay a young pick no matter what - Johnson or similar is there because you don't want to have to start yet another young QB immediately.

    >>the assumption there, and i think it's a bad one, is that weinke would have developed.

I do feel Weinke would have done better with a year to sit. It wasn't in the cards, and I don't blame his playing as a rook for his struggles.

    >>or, are you talking about collins,

Collins could have used more time on the bench. He did, however, gain some from playing early, because we simplified things so much and actually protected him.

    >>lewis and/or craig?

I don't think that Lewis could have used any more time by any means. He had too much...he got to year 5 without much play when he was basically a Fasani. He had no real grasp of the finer points of the position from actually doing them. Craig just wasn't progressing.

    >>but i agree, i have seen young QBs before get so beat up physically while the team was a mess in process that they could hardly move by the team improved.

And no point in pushing a young QB into that. Fasani for instance - if he gets ingrained that it's OK to run because he's allowed to run right now, how much harder is it to break later? He's a good pocket passer. You can't expect him to stand in there every down but you should want to see him do so some of the time. You should see him

David Carr was doing well before. Then the Chargers got ahold of him and now he's just taking a beating. He'll be better than Couch was, but will he take time to recover thanks to his poor line? Will he get gunshy?

I think Magnus means draft a 1st rounder, and sign a vet. And yes, I think we could afford that cap-wise.

Goddamit. I hate having to start over with QB's. This shit has been fucked up since 1998.

Yeah maybe drafting a 'franchise' qb in the top 10 is the right move. Fuck. That means we suck next year, too.

Our line can do better. Our line isn't poor, certainly not like Texas.

We stunk it bad yesterday, Weinke sacked 4 times in the first half.

But our line is better than many.

Patience, Meat. Before you die. Things are looking up. Defense is young and very, very good. Drafting does seem to have improved a lot. QB is looking more and more like 1st round pick next year. If we can afford it, a quality vet backup would be nice -- like they did with Vick and Brees. But Fasani may be good enough to start next year. Still, I would like to see us get a franchise type QB if there's one available. A couple of receivers and who knows. Very concerned about Terry. He was awful yesterday. I think we are 2 years away now. By then, I'll probably have gone over the edge and quit watching football entirely.

Anyone remember prior to the draft that there was an article on Steelers drafting prowness and why they passed on Morgan. Wonder if they still are feeling so smug?

Doubt that there was such an article, seeing as we took Morgan before they took Casey Hampton.

maybe they didn't pass on Morgan. maybe they were just saying that they liked their guy better than Morgan and the insinuation of article was that they had done a much stronger job of their homework and had gotten the better guy. they had brought their guy in and put him through all these workouts and rated him as one of the highest defenders ever. they didn't think Morgan had enough beef to play MLB. at least that's the way i remember it. i'm not a draftnik, so don't know the order but we were probably picking ahead of them so i accept and apologize for my err.

Probably talking about Kendrall Bell, their second round pick and DROY.

Different system, but Morgan is better than Bell for us. Faster. Bell hits hard, and may be a better blitzer. But Morgan is better, and the dropoff without him showed yesterday.
