Just a note on Keith's death. From the signage on the truck, Charles Security, it appears that Keith owned the company and wasn't just "working" security. Knowing SFU, he probably was filling in for an absent employee when he bought the farm. I imagine the employee had been killed by a mountain lion while power walking in the hills.

I think wrapping it up to show that Nate learned a huge cosmic lesson or the meaning of life would have been even more cheesy.
Sometimes that's just 'all there is' ,and that's hard to accept.

I can get with that. Like I said, the show really was completely noncommittal (and really leaning toward atheism) as a whole, so the absense of any form of universal wisdom or learning shouldn't have surprised me, but I think it went even further to sort of judge Nate by implying he was toxic to his family. Meanwhile, Brenda (and many others) appears to get a free pass when she was clearly just as disturbed as he was. I just think they missed out on capitalizing on the complexity that they invested in Nate throughout the course of the show. I mean, OK, I teared up and hugged my kids after I watched it, but that's cause they showed everybody die.
