UNCC is looking good with him right now. Him and Beasley would be a hell of a class by themselves.

Nice article, but its against NCAA Rules to do an interview with a player during their visit. That's technically an NCAA Recruiting violation. Not UNCC's fault, but in all reality it is a violation which Charlotte could get in trouble over. :banginghe

No violation unless an athletic department staff member was present. Jason may be covering the 49ers, but he works for Rivals, not the specific institution. All reporters and recruiting services do this.

Also, no public staff comments have been made about any player's specific recruitment.

NCAA Policy Manual, 13.10.1 Presence of Media during Recruiting Contact
A member institution shall not permit a media entity to be present during any recruiting contact made by an institution's coaching staff member. Violations of this bylaw do not affect a prospect's eligibility and are considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1. (Adopted: 1/9/96, Revised: 1/14/97)

NCAA Policy Manual, 13.10.2 Comments Before Signing
Before the signing of a prospect to a National Letter of Intent or an institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid, a member institution may comment publicly only to the extent of confirming its recruitment of the prospect. The institution may not comment generally about the prospect's ability or the contribution that the prospect might make to the institution's team; further, the institution is precluded from commenting in any manner as to the likelihood of the prospect's signing with that institution. Violations of this bylaw do not affect a prospect's eligibility and are considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1. (Revised: 1/14/97)

This constitutes being on the visit period. They aren't supposed to talk to them at all until they've ended their visit. If a player is staying in a UNCC dorm temporarily, that is considered under the team's watchcare. Don't get me wrong its a bullshit rule, but the University may called about it. I know a UNC site that was asked to leave recruits alone because of this.

I asked the question to Chris Thomasson...

As a long-time 49er (and a former student assistant with Judy back in the late 70s), can you answer this for me, or at least if there is a potential problem head it off down in Charlotte.

First of all, read the posts from these web sites: http://charlotte.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=450961 and http://www.thisboardrocks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94803.

My personal interpretation is that if the “media” talks to them while on their visit to Charlotte, it is not a violation as long as a staff member does not arrange it or is present for the interview. I noted the rules I felt applied to this in the thread.

Can you check this out and reply back to me?

    William Robertson

    And the reply...

    Mr. Robertson,

Sorry I was not able to get back to you yesterday. We are hosting the A-10 AD’s meetings and it has been a little busy around here. Your interpretation of the bylaw is correct. As long as the coaches do not set it up or are not in the presence when the media talks with the potential student athlete it is okay. Let me know if there are any more questions.

It was a phone interview, so this rule was not broken.
