    And the NCAA tournament didn't become the premier men's college basketball tournament until the 60s, correct? For years, the NIT was the bigger tournament because the NCAA field was made up of automatic qualifiers (conference champs) and few at-large teams. Those teams (non-conf. champs) went to the NIT, which more often than not had the stronger field.

    that makes UNC's 1957 title pretty much worthless. so there you have it: UNC for all intents and purposes has won three national championships. Throw in the fact that Georgetown and Michigan handed the Tarheels their wins in 82 and 93 (were the games fixed???) and UNC really has only won one title.

    So? They were still voted as National Champions. Gutter, yes...There is a 1924 national championship banner in The Smith Center.

    When I heard how whiny the UNC fans were about Fla. No doubt they are a good team. And all they have is a sound bite from the floor after FL. won the National Championship.
