I read about it and some of my friends take it for controlling their cholesterol. I was wondering if I should take it as well as the Lipitor. I bought 100 mg tablets but I haven't taken it yet.

Maybe ask your doctor or call Magnolia and ask her. I'm not sure it's a good idea to take them both without asking someone. Ask the gardner. :D

A report in the American Journal of Cardiology shows that niacin taken with cholesterol synthesis blockers such as Mevacor, can safely lower cholesterol and triglycerides to normal.

Doctors used to be afraid to prescribe niacin with cholesterol-lowering drugs because of reports of muscle damage causing the release of myoglobin that travels in the bloodstream to damage the kidneys. However, more recent studies show that the combination of niacin with cholesterol lowering drugs is safe and highly effective in preventing heart attacks. Niacin lowers triglycerides and cholesterol , while drugs such as Lipitor, Mevacor or Pravachol lower only cholesterol. Patients with high levels of triglycerides and cholesterol worked up to taking 2000 mg of niacin with 40 mg of Mevacor, which lowered LDL cholesterol by 47 percent and triglycerides by 41 percent. The most common side effect was flushing, which caused 10 percent of patients to withdraw.

    flushing

Yep, my golfing buddy said that he felt like he was sunburned on the inside. He mistakenly bought 500 mg tablets instead of his usual 250mg. I thought I would go with a low dose first- 100mg than step it up to 150mg and then try 200mg.

I'm starting the "new mao clinic diet" today, which involves a lot of grapefruit which I cannot have while taking Lipitor. I asked my Dr. about dropping the Lipitor and she said that would be fine for a short period. I would like to replace the Lipitor with the niacin to keeps the cholesterol down while I loose the inches.

I would think that any kind of diet to lose weight would drop your cholestrol. I take Niacin in my multi vitamin but it ain't but 80mg. Maybe I better get me some so I can be red too.

We take Solotron vitamins from GNC and there is about 30 mg which is the daily recommended dosage.

Milk thistle is the herbal pill for detoxing your liver.

I've been takeing one tablet of 100mg at night just before I turn off the light. Weird thing is I'm not sleeping soundly. It's either the diet or the niacin. I'm wondering if I should take it in the morning to see if I'll sleep better. I take it at night just like Lipitor since your liver produces cholesterol while you sleep. I can't find any info about when it should be taken. Anyone know? Ideas?:banginghe

Goldenseal and niacin helped get me into the Air Force. I remember that flushed/burning feeling well.
