checkers are slated to play there, IMO. their lease ends at cricket when the new arena opens. the canes are losing millions in raleigh- also; i think they should split games btw charlotte and raleigh.

I think the Checkers will end up playing in Uptown too . . Or better yet, why don't we just step up to the AHL :) ? ? ?

I do believe I heard awhile ago that the Canes H-A-V-E expressed an interest in playing preseason games here once the new arena opens up. Yeah, the Canes are still losing money in Raleigh, but keep in mind the hockey setup at the new arena will only be 14,000 . . The new Uptown Arena will be setup like the rink at American West Arena in Phoenix where the NHL Coyotes play (i.e. one end of lower level seating will disappear to fit the rink in)

    America West Arena-Hockey Setup

This is how architects make basketball seating closer to the court at arenas (like SBC Center in San Antonio, Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Key Arena in Seattle, & America West Arena in Phoenix). They angle the seating so the seating bowl/levels are closer to the court vs. setting an arena up to fit a hockey rink (like most other arenas are designed). With the AWA setup to be more hoops friendly for the NBA Suns, this leaves less seating for the NHL Coyotes. Less seating=less money for NHL teams (and in the case of AWA in Phoenix, the upper level seating in one end of the arena you can't see one end of the rink!!!!! The end of the rink disappears under the lip of the upper level).

VR Tour of New Glendale Arena

This is why after years of losing money at AWA, the Coyotes are moving to a new 17,000 arena in Glendale at the end of the year . . . . Normal seating+more skyboxes/clubseats (I think they don't get this revenue stream playing at the AWA)=more profit for the Coyotes :) . . .

Now considering that our new arena will only seat 14,000 folks for hockey, this is about 3-4,000 fewer short of what an NHL team would need to succed here. Plus the seating would be screwed up (I'm sure there would be a lower level seating under the lower level bowl like there is at AWA . . These obstructed view seats would go for a discount) and the NBA team would get all of the skybox/clubseat revenue I'm sure. Thus, another 18,000 arena would have to be built (or perhaps save the current Hive and put in an ice rink there :) . . . But they can't do that because it will be sold to Duke Power/Wachovia/BoA for them to redevelop the area, so scratch that idea . . ). the city doesn't have any money to build a 2nd arena, nor is this area large enough to support one. Thus the Canes will be staying in Raleigh for the long term I'm afraid . . .

i really like the fact that the new plans by ellerbe beckett enhance each side of the arena, making it vibrant with the street side, instead of blank walls.
