Report: NCSU offers coaching job to Lavin
    DAVID SCOTT
    [email protected]
N.C. State has offered its men's basketball coaching job to former UCLA coach Steve Lavin, according to an Internet report Friday night.

According to the Sporting News' Web site, Lavin has not yet decided whether to accept the job.

Lavin, who could not be reached, has worked for three years as an analyst for ESPN. Wolfpack athletics director Lee Fowler, who had already had offers for the job turned down by Texas' Rick Barnes and Memphis' John Calipari, was also unavailable Friday.

Lavin had a seven-season record of 145-78 record at UCLA. He was fired in 2003 after the Bruins went 10-19.

Herb Sendek resigned earlier this month after 10 seasons at N.C. State to take the job at Arizona State.

I still am having a hard time digesting the fact that seemingly independent reports say that State hasn't even bothered with Marshall. That's extremely disappointing.

but Marshall, as good as he likely can be (and has been so far), is not a big name. Pack Nation would not be happy with that.

I would agree, everyone else seems to have been contacted. Just because a coach has a name doesn't guarantee success.

Fuck Pack Nation. Fowler's a basketball guy. Shouldn't be about appeasing the fan base. And with Herb, it wasn't. Why should it be now?

I wonder if they even bothered calling Winthrops coach?

Supposedly, Marshall is extremely cocky to such a degree that he comes off as a jerk. Ever wonder why someone as successful as he is has never been offered a job anywhere else. If you tick off every AD you interview with, it gets around....

As far as Lavin, I'm not really sure what to make of him. My fav. going in was Calipari. I wanted no part of Barnes. Post-Calipari, Mike Montgomery would have been good and frankly, a little surprised he didn't show more interest. He is only earning 2.5 million at Golden State. NCSU could have easily matched 2.5 million and 2.5 million in Raleigh buys you a compound. 2.5 million in San Fran. buys you a dingy 1 bed room condo.
