State's Leslie to miss three games after receiving impermissible benefits
    Submitted by egrobinson on 11/11/2011 - 18:29

    Updated 10:55 p.m.

RALEIGH – N.C. State officials announced on Friday that sophomore forward C.J. Leslie will sit out three games after it was determined he and a relative received impermissible benefits totaling $410.

State officials said in a release that the school reported the violations to the NCAA, adding that the university and the NCAA conducted a joint inquiry to determine the facts.

In its release, State said Leslie borrowed a car from a friend and former N.C. State student following an auto accident in May. He used the car for about a week after totaling his car, State athletic direct Debbie Yow said in an interview following the team’s 84-75 victory over UNC Asheville at the RBC Center.

In addition, the release said, the former student paid an apartment application fee for Leslie's half-brother.

Leslie, a 6-foot-8 forward from Holly Springs, sat on the bench in street clothes during Friday’s game.

State declared Leslie ineligible, the release said, and a reinstatement was requested through the NCAA, which granted the request on Tuesday provided he serve the three-game suspension and make “foregoing charitable contributions.”

Leslie will make charitable contributions of $410, the release said, which will represent the value of the car had it been rented ($150) and the apartment application fee ($260).

Leslie will return to the court on Nov. 19 against Vanderbilt. He has practiced with the team.

"I understand the issue and regret what has occurred," Leslie said in a statement. "I will support my teammates in every way possible and look forward to getting back on the court.”

N.C. State first-year coach Mark Gottfried said his staff has not been involved with the discussions with the NCAA.

“He has accepted the responsibility,” Gottfried said. “And you move on. ... His teammates cheer for him a lot. His role for a couple of nights is to cheer for them.”

Gottfried said he told Leslie that “luckily” the team plays again on Sunday (Morehead State) and Wednesday (Princeton). Then he's back.

“I think these things do happen,” Yow said. “And C.J. is paying a price for having borrowed the car. He loves the game. So sitting out three games matters to him. But it’s resolved.”

Yow said this case can be used as a teaching moment for State student-athletes.

“C.J. understands that he can’t borrow a booster’s car,” she said. “He did not know about the assistance to his half-brother. It’s still a family member.”
Yow said “someone suggested” to the athletic department that Leslie had borrowed a car.

“Then we asked him and he was up front,” Yow said. “He said, ‘He had.’ We said to him that that person is a booster technically. You shouldn’t be doing that.”

Yow said had Leslie known he might have been eligible for help from the “student opportunity fund” after wrecking his car.

“When you’re young, you don’t think about things like that,” she said. “Nor do you think a friend – to me, it’s a booster. ... You don’t think when they are closer to your age, you don’t think about them like that. So I understood why. But we still have to do the right thing.”
