    Wolfpack lands Belgian forward
    By J.P. Giglio

    Posted: Thursday, May. 19, 2011

New N.C. State basketball coach Mark Gottfried landed a top national recruit from Belgium on Monday.

Gottfried had to look harder for forward Thomas de Thaey, who has signed a Letter of Intent to play for the Wolfpack this season. Gottfried added de Thaey on Wednesday from Belgium's national program, via the Canary Islands. The 6-8 power forward joins wing Tyler Harris and guard Jaqwan Raymond in State's incoming 2011 class for this fall.

"He is a very physical, yet skilled player who brings some toughness to our team," Gottfried said in a statement released by the school. "He's an excellent shooter who can make an immediate contribution."

The Wolfpack returns forwards C.J. Leslie, Jordan Vandenberg and DeShawn Painter but loses power forward Tracy Smith, the leading scorer for the past two years, from last year's 15-16 team. Former recruit Joseph Uchebo, who was released from his Letter of Intent shortly after Gottfried replaced Sidney Lowe this spring, also will not be wearing an N.C. State uniform.

De Thaey, who will turn 20 before the basketball season starts, averaged 18.4 points and 6.8 rebounds for Belgium's Under-20 team in 2010. He was also being recruited by the University of Washington.

"Playing in the ACC and having the opportunity to learn from a staff that has over 30 years of head coaching experience on the D1 level was a very big factor in my decision," de Thaey said in a statement released by the school. "Coach Gottfried wants to build a program that will compete for the ACC Championship and I want to be a part of it."

N.C. State still has three open scholarships for Gottfried's first season. Earlier in the week, Gottfried landed guard Torian Graham, a top 30 recruit from Durham who played at Word of God Academy, in the class of 2012.

    They need to start:

    Rich Gannon
    Thurl Baily
    Lorenzo Charles
    Sydney Lowe

and have Spudd Web, Charles Shackelford and Rodney Monroe coming off the bench.
