From the CLT Observer. A list of possible coaching candidates with pros/cons. Curious as to who the State fans on the board like best, if any, of the coaches mentioned.

    Pack Coaching Search

    • John Beilein, West Virginia
RECORD: 77-61 in four seasons at WVU.

WHY HIM?: Turned around a struggling program for deep NCAA tournament runs in the past two seasons.

WHY NOT?: Runs a version of the Princeton offense, which N.C. State fans despised under Sendek.

    - John Brady, Louisiana State
RECORD: 166-111 in nine seasons at LSU.

WHY HIM?: Inherited a program riddled with NCAA sanctions in 1997 and took it to the Final Four in 2006, eliminating top-seeded Duke along the way.

WHY NOT?: Many describe him as abrasive, which wouldn't be a good match with Wolfpack fans hoping for a charismatic leader.

    • Mike Brey, Notre Dame
RECORD: 118-70 in six seasons at Notre Dame.

WHY HIM?: Has taken the Irish to the NCAA tournament and has an ACC background as an assistant at Duke.

WHY NOT?: His teams rely heavily on 3-point shooting -- like Sendek's teams -- and have slumped in recent seasons after a strong start to his tenure.

    • Tom Crean, Marquette
RECORD: 161-87 in eight seasons at Marquette.

WHY HIM?: Restored glory for a once-proud, NCAA champion program with a Final Four trip, and oh, by the way, recruited Dwyane Wade.

WHY NOT?: He's probably comfortable with his $1.65 million annual salary.

    • Billy Gillespie, Texas A&M
Record: 43-19 in two seasons at Texas A&M.

Why him?: He's an excellent recruiter and won as an underdog when Texas A&M defeated Texas and Syracuse.

Why not?: Hasn't yet proven he can win big in the NCAA tournament.

    • Frank Haith, Miami
RECORD: 34-29 in two seasons at Miami.

WHY HIM?: Grew up in Burlington and developed a reputation as an excellent recruiter as an assistant coach at Texas.

WHY NOT?: The ACC frowns on member schools poaching coaches from other ACC schools.

    • Jim Larranaga, G. Mason
RECORD: 166-105 in nine seasons at George Mason.

WHY HIM?: Former Virginia assistant played giant killer in the NCAA tournament, defeating Michigan State, North Carolina and Connecticut en route to an improbable Final Four berth at mid-major George Mason.

WHY NOT?: He isn't used to recruiting the caliber of athletes N.C. State needs to compete with North Carolina and Duke.

    • Bobby Lutz, Charlotte
RECORD: 154-96 in eight seasons at Charlotte.

WHY HIM?: Has taken Charlotte to five NCAA tournaments despite being overshadowed by the ACC schools in North Carolina.

WHY NOT?: N.C. State wouldn't make a big national splash by hiring him.

    • Gregg Marshall, Winthrop
RECORD: 165-78 in eight seasons at Winthrop.

WHY HIM?: Familiar with the Carolinas and has made Winthrop one of the top mid-major programs in the nation.

WHY NOT?: He always gets overlooked for top jobs, and N.C. State fans might say if he's not good enough for Tennessee or Virginia, he's not good enough for the Wolfpack.

    • Bob McKillop, Davidson
RECORD: 262-202 in 16 seasons at Davidson.

WHY HIM?: Has won plenty in the Southern Conference and has recruited athletes with excellent character and academic ability.

WHY NOT?: Some big-name recruits won't be familiar with him, so that would cause problems for McKillop initially in this job.

    • Dereck Whittenburg
RECORD: 35-54 in three seasons at Fordham.

WHY HIM?: Won an NCAA title as a player at N.C. State in 1983 and has made radical improvement to Wagner and Fordham in his two head-coaching jobs.

WHY NOT?: Has yet to prove he can succeed against big-time coaches in a big-name conference.

    • Jay Wright, Villanova
    RECORD: 104-59 in five seasons.

WHY HIM?: Returned national prominence to the "other" team that won an unforgettable NCAA title game upset in the 1980s.

WHY NOT?: His wife is a Villanova graduate, and he signed a contract extension in February and reassured athletics director Vince Nicastro on Thursday of his commitment to Villanova.

Marshall, 'cuz Wright ain't going anywhere. Also, Fowler can drive to Rock Hill without worrying about someone stalking him at the airport.

I can't believe that I honestly feel bad for State.

Hopefully this will be a big wakeup call to the NCSU fans and remind them that they are in fact not an elite program.

I don't. Fuck them. They brought this on themselves. At this point I actually think that they have become more delusional than UNCC fans - which is something I never really thought was possible.

Well I don't feel bad for State fans, just the university. But yeah, I'm sure I'll hate them again when football season rolls around.

It's gonna be even funnier when they run Amato off and expect John Cooper, Pete Carrol, or Mack Brown to interview for their job.

Maybe they need to start combing the high schools?
