yeah, i was going to suggest the same thing. guaranteed contracts are bogus. i think they're working on this via shorter contract lengths. right now, it's 6 years (or 7 if you re-sign your own FA's). they want to cut it to 4/5. that's better, but i would go with 3/4 with extensions available after the 2nd year. that way, players are always playing for a contract.

why not require the players to prove themselves through the minor league (College). that's not too much to ask. we all have to do it. they make too much money to take the chances the owners are having to take. make them prove it in college first then pay them. pay mccants, felton and may. they have earned it. fuck all these high school kids making easy money or loosing eligiblility and not making it in the nba. that sucks just as bad. once you get and agent your fucked.

This shit is funny. There is no proof what-so-ever that college will improve their overall skills. College won't help them improve their jumpshot (only self practice will and they can do that on their own). College won't improve their man-to-man defense (practicing against the best players in the world everyday won't help them?) They either have the talent or not. As great as a coach Mike K. and Bobby Knight are I can only think of 1 NBA hall of famer (Isiah Thomas) amongst them.

College will give them something to fall back on, which is all i care about.

The raw ability to make millions is no excuse not to teach yourself what you need to know to handle it and yourself when you get them.

I don't think the answer is an age limit, because let's face it nobody involved is really interested in protecting these young men. The NBA wants the age limit because their product is hurt by teams drafting these guys based on potential rather than talent and forcing them to play too early. The college game wants the age limit so that they can have these guys play for at least a couple of years for them. Most fans that are against it are against it for one of the same two reasons.

If the NBA is serious about improving it's product and limiting the number of teenagers, they need to develop a two tiered minor league system. Then they need to expand their draft to five or six rounds, and send the vast majority of those picks to their minor leagues. That would enable the young guys to develop for a much cheaper price, would let the teams keep the talent they develop when it's time for them to play in the league, and would probably keep a lot of players from making the jump early. What teenager would want to give up college ball for a couple of years of riding buses around the nation playing in small towns for peanuts?

I agree with that. But here's my answer.
I once advised a kid, that was a number one pick for the Pirates out of high school, to take a portion of the signing bonus and pay for his education guaranteed.
He did'nt do it and now he's working somewhere in Canada as a security guard or something to that effect. The money's there if someone with influence directs them well. If that's all you are worried about then there's the remedy.

I was talking about more than basic financial advice.

Most of these kids still live with mama, and she does all their cooking and cleaning. Forget balancing a checkbook, these kids are just like other high school kids and have no idea about the world, let alone a lot of experience functioning in it.

It would be highly beneficial if they had an education & the associated maturity before throwing all that money at them and dragging them around the country, where they have nothing to do but possibly give in to every piece of bad advice or vice they are presented with.

    Oh, and blow their $$.

    Obviously, you disagree.

It's also highly beneficial for people who flip burgers or haul horseshit for a living. A man in those jobs can piss away a few thou as fast as an NBA kid can piss away a few million if he really wants to. So BFD.

No I don't disagree. Most of the stuff you are referring to cannot be learned on a whim in college. It comes from home training.
Prime example is Jason Williams from Duke. Sitting on top of the world and ruined his career because he got bored and decided to indulge in something that is strictly forbidden in his contract.

College teaches them the fundamentals to team basketball....it shows the player that the team is the ultimate goal.....it prepares them for the bright lights of the NBA....it helps them mature and get ready for the responsibilities that go along with a job......it teaches them basic skills like money management....but most importantly....

and this is purely selfish....it makes the player PROVE he is worth a shit before an owner and NBA fan dish out THEIR hard earned money....it's NOT fair that we have to watch the KIDS learn how to play on the NBA level....FOUR years it takes an EXCEPTIONAL player to come into his own....the ONLY exception is JAMES and he struggled his first year....

Point is it's not fair to the fan, owner or players for kids to enter the NBA. It all around sucks.
