A record of not being cheap ? Is this the same Bob Johnson that sold out BET to a white owner after investing 15,000 in it to start with? Is this the same bob johnson that wouldn't work with a Black group and help them buy BET ?
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is this the Bob Johnson that has the rep of not being cheap?

In May 2000, BET made the AFL-CIO's list of notorious anti-union companies, and the year before, 120 comedians, including Richard Pryor, bought full-page newspaper advertisements to complain that Johnson refused to offer union wages to performers on its "Comic View" show. Three years before that, Johnson was reprimanded by the National Labor Relations Board for BET's interference with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers' organizing efforts, a case that BET later appealed and won. But in February 2000, Johnson told USA Today, "We don't need a union. They're only money-making machines."

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's why he sold BET to Viacom in the first place. That's why he supported President Bush's tax cuts. That's why he assembled a group of black millionaires to fight for the repeal of the inheritance tax. And that's why he served on President Bush's commission that recommended privatizing social security.

What does this have to do with anything? The guy just wrote a 300 million dollar check to the NBA to get Charlotte back in the NBA. Who cares that he sold BET- to a white man? Johnson is a businessman that sold his business to another businessman.

If you don't support the team that's fine but, I've seen nothing to suggest that Johnson resembles any part of the scum bags that just left.

The main problem most people (or atleast I) had with Shinn was that he didn't spend the money to put a championship team on the court.

Johnson has done nothing yet but, promise us a team that won't settle for not being the best and he will get players that the community will be proud of. What more can you ask?

He has yet to trade or release his best player rather than to pay him. He didn't just fire the best coach his team ever had. He's not crying and threatening to relocate the franchise over an arena that he helped design that isn't even 10 years old yet. Yep, George is gonna' be one tough act to follow.

Come now boys--I was just putting a dose of reality into the thing. Don't go getting your panties all bunched up. It mattered that he sold to Viacom because he made his money off the Black people and then would not help finance a black group to carry on. That equates to cheapness and greed. It matters that he made this statement ---"We don't need a Union"--It shows what and how he feels about Unions which are part of the business of the NBA.
Don't y'all go hollering that shit again about "not supporting the team" and all that weak crap. I supported the last team and also supported the Cougars years ago when some of y'all was shitting green but now a few people in Charlotte are acting like they go to church with this man and vouching for his integrity when in fact they know little or nothing about him. To assume that to Johnson that this is any more than a business venture is to assume wrong. Wasn't that long ago that y'all was giving Shinn the farm and throwing him a ticker tape parade.
Johnson has promised the same things that Shinn and his group of owners promised back a few years ago. Will he come through? Y'all don't know that and neither do I. until he does, I will go by his proven track record of being cheap.

I'm sure that statement was based on his veiw at the time dealing with the out cry from BET employees....
Your saying he feels that way overall, why would he even bother with buying a professional sports team??? Union is not going anywere anytime soon in the NBA....

They are good business investments. He was buying motels until this NBA team come along. I have no idea how he is going to be and how good a owner he will make but I guarantee he ain't in this thing because of his love for the game and his desire to do good and great things for the people of Charlotte. To say he has deep posckets and that he will dig to get the best is rather presumptious.

putt, you make good points. but i am not going to judge johnson yet, i'd like to see him perform as an owner first. thanks for the info though- i'm trying to feel positive about a basketball team after just reading negative over the hornets for the last 3 years.

Putt, everything he has done fits 99 percent of the people in his position. He got rich by being greedy. I don't see anything wrong with a guy making a better buck from Viacom rather than being some sort of Afirmative Action for Black Millionaires. Those that don't want to make money usually don't. Most white billionaires I suppose dislike Unions, taxes, vote republican, and care about the color green more than any other color. I don't see why this guy would be any different because he is black.

He is in this for the money, and the only real way to make money is to win and be a playoff team (unless you are in Charlotte, then I guess you have to win a championship and keep your dick in your pants.) If San Antonio can build a good team and make money, so can Charlotte.
