where exactly does it hurt? does it hurt more going up stairs or down stairs?

sounds like tendonitis to me....possibly "runner's knee."

No. I have torn my ACL twice and if you have torn it and try to excercise, the chances of you really messing up your knee increase. Call an orthopedic surgeon and ask how much it wil be for an evaluation. It should not be a whole bunch - $75 or so at the most. Then ask them for a Lochman test. They will be able to determine with about 90% accuracy if your ACL is torn. I never had an MRI done on either of my diognoses because the ACL this test showed a definite tear. If you have damaged your ACL and then try to excercise after you feel better you will increase the chance of damaging you meniscus - or cartledge that coushins your knee joint. This cannot be replaced, your ACL can. In addition, if the injury is fresh, they can try to reattach teh torn meniscus (if you have torn it). If it is torn and you can't afford surgery, you at least will know that you need to take extra care. They can also prescribe excercises that can strengthen you knee and compensate for the lack of an ACL. Finally, you may be able to purchase a custom brace (although these aren't cheap) that will keep your knee stable during twisting motions.

    Go get it checked out.

I hurt it last year first of all. I believe I did it while running. I had to stay off of it for a couple weeks but was able to run again after 3 weeks of staying off it. The same this time around...was running again and the next day my knee didn't feel the same. There's no swelling anywhere that I can see but it does feel "loose". When I sit down and try to extend it, it does "pop". It doesn't hurt much going up and downstairs, I haven't really tried to put much weight on it but I know it doesn't feel right.

The wierd thing is I've played tennis for 12 years and this crap has never happened before. Though I did have tennis elbow. Right now I can't afford shit except pay off student loans. If my knee is really fucked, I'm going in the hole big time....

if you did it while running, that's usually a sign of an over use injury. jogging is pretty rough on leg joints and lower back, especailly if your shoes suck or are worn out. From what you described, it sounds like tendonitis....do a google search on "runner's knee" and see if the rest of the sympton agree to what you are experiencing.

you don't really see people sever tendons and ligaments from jogging...however, small tears cause inflamation, ie tendonititis. Rest is the only thing that will get rid of it which is what you did last time. Anti-inflamatories will help...ibuprofen, aspririn, aleve, etc.

the popping can be actually normal. it is part of getting older. both my knees pop but I don't have any pain in them.

I can't run more than 2 or 3 hundred yards before I'm too tired to see if my knee would give out after 2 miles.
