i found this posting on a help forum. it seems to fit my symptoms.

I am a 29 year old male and have been experiencing occasional discharge from my belly button. There is no pain, but it has been happening every 2-4 days for the past month. The discharge is typically a very small amount a brown, redish substance and has a very pungent odor. When I clean the area, the belly button looks fine. No apparent cuts, swelling, etc.

Any thoughts on this strange condition?

    Dear Clint:
Thank you for your question regarding umbilical drainage. As pointed out by both Laura and Trisha localized infections can be a source of umblilical drainage (yeast being the most common). I would also alert you to the possibility of an umbilical sinus or fistula. I would have a physician carefully examine the area - preferably when drainage is noted. Sincerely, FWR

no sugar, no beer, no liquor, no bread with any type of yeast used in it's making, basically yeast likes any thing that tastes good. no potato's, no rice, no pasta. basically meat and steamed veggies and nothing else for like 6 weeks. i might be wrong on a few of these points, but i'm close - i don't remember all of it.
