I didn't want to troll up the discussion in the church music thread, but I thought of something as the topic was brought up of what constitutes worship... music versus teaching/instruction.

I saw a DVD of this black metal band playing live. The venue was lit up in sinister blood-red light, and a large backdrop of a ghoulish skeletal Madonna (Mary) and baby was behind the band.

A small percentage of this band's songs are blatantly Satanic; the rest cover general subjects of dark fantasy and spiritual independence/rebellion... But, the only people who would even know most of the words would be those who read the liner notes of the CD beforehand, due to the vocal style. In any case, it's a concert, and the audience is there to have a good time; there's not a lot of chatter from the band between songs.

One song ends with a lower mid-tempo beat to which the crowd raises the horned-hand salute and moves their hands in time to the rythm, chanting "hail, hail, hail..." Maybe in half-jest, maybe not, but "worked up" for a concert audience.

Would that be considered a form of worship of dark powers? Why or why not?

I guess it depends on how you define worship. I think you could make the case for it being worship though.

I ask because someone brought up (maybe you, I don't remember) the idea that music alone doesn't equal worship, or that emotional music without being backed up by the teaching of doctrine is incomplete when it comes to a religious service.

I guess a better question would be, "What is worship?" There was another thread by that name, I think, but I bring this up in a much broader sense.

The scenerio you describe would not be worship as I define it because there is not realization in the minds of those doing it regarding what they are doing or why. To me worship only takes place when you actually realize what you are doing. Many would probably disagree with that though.

In the context of a church service, I am looking for more than an opportunity to worship but to also learn and be corrected as well as encouraged.

I'd agree with Thelt in that generically speaking worship is, in principle, a very intentional act. It goes deeper than just going through some motions to be accepted by other people. It's an act of adoration to a specific being or idea.

Entertainment is not worship, and the line between the two is defined by the mind and intention of the individual.

That is very interesting considering that Middle Ages church was basically compulsary, chanting or sung, and the people could not read what was being said.

I really dont have anything to back this up except for a gut feeling but I think the Catholic church started off good but got farther and farther away from what God intended until God brought about the reformation and the protestants.
