".... i'd do a song and dance number for ya, but i am not very good.

Hell, don't let that stop you...never mind, that'd lead to insulting ya'lls "taste" in entertainment. :D

It was four years ago today.

    8-7-98 Raliegh, NC

1: Water in the Sky > Drowned, Frankie Says, Stash, Brian and Robert, Foam, Bittersweet Motel, Ghost, Colonel Forbin's Ascent** > Famous Mockingbird

2: Chalkdust Torture > Mike's Song > Simple > Albuquerque, Limb By Limb > Wading in the Velvet Sea, Weekapaug Groove

    E: Funky Bitch

My friend Dave made us late getting out of Charlotte. Be ready to go at noon. He wasn't even up. I had to haul ass to make it to Raliegh, and research park didn't help. Nearly got hit by a tin box carrying half a dozen heads, the driver was already token. Don't think it would have hurt my Blazer, the van would have crumpled on contact like a mosquitoe hitting my windshield. We get there safe and sound, park in the field. A hell, it's raining. No, make that drizzilling big rain drops. Not everywhere. Just in spots. Or maybe I'm trippin.

I hate missing the opening, so I tell Dave to hurry up. The parking lot scene will be there later. Just as we get to the gate, I hear the opening strings of "Water in the Sky." There's a holdup at the gate. This cute little blonde chick with a hair bonnett, hippie skirt and red top (standard head shop hippie fare) comes
up to me and asks "Brother, can you spare your socks?"

I've been panhandled at shows before. For money, drugs, tickets, even tapes. This is the first time anyone wanted my socks. Seems security wasn't letting anyone go in without shoes on, even on the lawn, hence the holdup at the gate. Yes, shoes aren't a big priority for some. Seems the little doll "misplaced" her sandels somewhere from the lot and the gate, or so she tells me. So I give the chick my socks. I tell her not to worry, but I had just gotten back from Africa and had this foot fungus no one has been able to ID (not really, of course). She crinkles her nose, but places the socks on her bare feet anyway. They let her through. No shoes, no problem, but you can't go barefoot.

I get in by the opening chords of "Drowned" (ha-ha-ha) and the rain is coming down a little bit. Back of the lawn. First time hearing Brian and Robert other than on tape. Stash dissapoints, never really goes anywhere. Foam was good and tight. This set kind of drags until Ghost though, which just kicks ass. Forbin and Mockingbird was nice. "ballroom" danced with some chick during mockingbird.

We meander. Talked to this one kid, all of 19, says this is his 99th show. Horseshit, I say. The kids always triple the number of shows they say they've been to. People think it gives them more "cred." Sort of like somepeople view posts at TBR.

Set 2 was much better. Trey was rocking during Chalkdust with mojo. And then right into Mike's Groove, and its a good one. OK, this makes up for the lackluster set 1. A good energy set all the way through. Wading in the Velvet Sea lets me catch my breath, before we get right back into the groove. Only a short encore, a standard, but good and bluesy Funky Bitch. And they played a moster Mike's, so I ain't really complaining.

We hang out by the car for a little while, buzz down, drag out the cooler, some guy tries to get us to go to an after show party, but we opt out. (edit - dammit, these shows are running together). We go to Merriweather after a while. I sleep on the way. But I do remember waking up to see the sun set.

    piper, you are funny.

so you got a live version of "mike's song"?

helluva story. i will have to determine which ones are trippin and which ones are real...i think that one dancing with a chick thru mockingbird was tripping. hehe
    ;)

lemme tell you one story, piper. has nothing to do with a concert, tho. has to do with why i quit tripping.

this was many moons ago. anyhoo...this was in malibu, calif. one summer, after dinner, we went out to the beach for a walk. a slew of us, two of my sisters were there, my hubby included and friends, oh and a cousin. my hubby smoked pot before, not me. i never had. long story short, i was smoking some (sensimillia i think) felt good, i was fine for a while, then i started to scream because as i step in the sand i started to go deep. like in quick sand. it was horrible. i was like drowning! i swear to god, i screamed the whole beach down. bad trip. i saw my hubby fussing over me, was my last recollection of that night. next day, i remembered exactly why i was screaming. my sisters and my hubby made so much fun of me, never again did i smoke none of that shit!

anyhoo, i guess you could say i learned the hard way.

well, i think you remembering seeing the sunset was not tripping! cant see how anyone can forget that cool experience!

    no shit. audiogalaxy had it!

Yeah, drugs are an America's Funniest Home Video waiting to happen. Just pot did that to you? Heh.

Acid did that to me. Just had no feeling of time.

If you have a copy of Mike's, whether official or boot, it's a live version. There are no studio versions.

dont know much of phish, as you can tell.

cant even handle pot, let alone acid. no, when it comes to that, i am a real wuss!
    :(

Dude, I've seen Trey and the boys 197 times. Or was that 198 times? Hell, I can't remember from all the good trips I've had.

That's funny Piper. You're right though, the"kids" always seem to triple, hell quintuple the number of shows they've seen. Makes 'em look cool.

In my opinion, it's not the quantity of shows you've seen, but the quality of the shows you've seen. For example, I saw Miles Davis at Ovens Auditorium in 1989. One time...probably the greatest show I ever been to.

My favorite band is Galactic. I've seen them once. They just don't come around Charlotte much. Can't wait until the 23rd!!!:guitar: :drums:

    Lex...
    To answer your original questions:
    1. Some good instrumental jams...Steve Kimock, Addison Groove Project, or MMW. Can't do smooth jazz..just can't.
    2. Mags is probably just polishing his horn. :handjob: :naughty:
    3. Chicken's always good..especially in the guise of a big fat burrito. Damn, I'm getting hungry!

Lexy, did you have a flashback just now? ;)

Saw Galactic once myself. Good band. Keep meaning to pick up a show or CD or something.

I've been phishing mearly 53 times myself, and I went to my first show in 93. Saw most of those 94-96. I did get to see some fairly awesome high profile shows, like Halloween 96 and NYE 97. Getting tickets to NYE is like winning lotto. I know some people who have seen plus 100, but most of those guys are veterans.

Don't forget Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Chip. Another good one.
