Somebody wanna explain to me what the this movie was about? I just rented it and if it wasn't for watching the lesbian scene about 4 times I would have never made it through the movie. I watched it to the end, and still have no clue what the hell happened. Weirdass fucking movie.

    This is my interpretation:

Its an extended death flashing before her eyes/dream sequence. The way I see it is Rita died in the accident but we are seeing her leave and view her life. Somethings matter (the meeting with the director) and others are irrelevant (the weird furry man) just like in our dreams. The dream is basically kinda like Rita's life flashing before her eyes a la Its a Beautiful Life. The blonde girls (ie the waitress, the actress Camilla, and the aspiring actress) are all the same girl. This girl is Rita's projection of herself when she first came to Hollywood. She is the dream that Rita has of herelf. Rita is being offed by the mob but they must do it very incognito since she is an actress. Hence the cowboy (he's the coolest) and the decision to cast her in the movie. She (Rita) is upset by the engagement at the party becasue she was going to that party when the car crashed (ie mob offed her).

Thats just my thought though. In the liner notes to the DVD Lynch gives hints for figuring the movie out.

1 Pay attention to the begining of the film. Atleast 2 clues are revealed beofre the credits

2 Notice the appearance of the red lampshade

3 Can you hear the title of the film that Adam is auditioning actress' for? Is it mentioned again?

4 An accident is a terrible event...notice the location of the accident

5 Who gives a key and why?

6 Notice the robe the ashtray and the coffee cup.

7 What is felt, realized, and gathered at the club Silencio

8 Did talent alone help Camilla

9 Note the occurences surrounding the man at Winkies

    10 Where is Aunt Ruth?

    Those helped me none.

I actually liked the movie until it kinda fell apart at the end. ( and it was the extended scene in the theatre that seemed to lose me) I knew going in it was going to be weird just because it was David Lynch. As a matter of fact I would have been disappointed if it had a normal ending.

I stopped trying to "figure out" movies a long time ago. Movies are strictly entertainment for me.

I'll watch it again. That lesbian makeout scene was great. Definitely some nice eye candy in this movie. :)

I have a ton of crap to do today, but I'll come back later and explain the movie as best I can. It's one of the most complex movies I've ever seen and I had to view it twice to figure it out, but once it "makes sense" you have to be amazed at how something like that was even thought up.

    Later.

    Mulholland Drive explained (W/ SPOILERS)

    **SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** **SPOILERS** **SPOILERS**
DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED MULHOLLAND DRIVE YET!

OK. Mulholland Drive. This movie is all about Dream vs. Reality and a troubled woman escaping the problems in her life in a fanciful dream.

The thing you have to understand is that the movie is kind of split in half. The first part of the movie is a dream; the second is reality. The details of the reality explain the details of the dream. But repeated viewings are the best way to get it. :) It works best when I watch this movie with people and explain it when it gets weird. But I'll do my best here. So, here we go...

    THE DREAM

    * The movie opens with a strange montage of sock hoppers dancing. The sequence ends with an image of a happy, smiling girl in a dress. This is Diane dreaming of a sock hop contest she won years ago. She wakes up. We see through her eyes as she moves over the covers and falls back asleep.

    * From here until later the movie is Diane's dream. The scene at Winkie's with the scared guy and the burnt hobo behind the corner, the mystery of "Rita" and the bag of money, the storyline with the director and the mob asshole movie execs, the Cowboy, the grungy hitman, and the body in the bed, all are part of Diane's wishful fantasy world. She dreams she is an awesomely talented actress who wows the movie makers at her audition. But the main part of her fantasy is the afforementioned lesbian scene where the lovely Rita falls into her arms as her lover.

    * The dream begins to unravel at the surreal Club Silencio. The devilish host's monologue ("it is all an illusion") hints that Diane's fantasy cannot last long. This revelation reveals the key to the weird blue box. "Betty" finally vanishes, and when Rita opens the box, she does too and the dream is over. The Cowboy ends the dream telling the real blonde, Diane, that it's "time to wake up."

    REALITY

    * From there we see reality. This reality reveals to us where the parts of the dream came from.

    * Diane is a lesbian who has just had her ex-lover, the voluptuous Camilla, killed by a hitman, possibly in a car wreck of some kind.

REALITY IN FLASHBACK (what happened before the dream)

    * Through flashbacks we learn that the two were in a passionate relationship, where Camilla was clearly dominant and Diane was the clingy, needy one. Camilla was really the star in real life, while Diane tagged along in lousy bit roles. Camilla began seeing the director of the movie she and Diane were in, and Diane became seethingly jealous.

    * Diane became obsessive when Camilla tried to break it off. Finally Camilla invited Diane to a dinner party, where we see again that Diane is really an unwanted third wheel. Camilla spent the evening hanging all over the director, even kissed another woman, obviously flashing it in Diane's face. The director's mother Coco was polite but condecending to Diane, clearly seeing her as "beneath" her, just another wannabe starlet.

    * At the dinner party, Diane saw numerous strangers who would later return in her subconscious as dream characters, including a portly, gangster-like Italian guy, a mysterious girl who kissed Camilla and walked away, and a passing stranger in a huge cowboy hat.

    * Camilla sank the dagger into Diane's heart when she and the director announced they were going to be married. Diane was heartbroken and enraged. So she met a grungy hitman at Winkie's to take out a hit on Camilla. Here we see where the following dream bits were inspired: the name Betty on the waitress's nametag, the phrase "this is the girl," the bag of money, and the motif of the Blue Key.

    AFTERMATH

    * Camilla is dead; Diane knows because she has recieved the blue key, the hitman's signal that the job is complete. Diane's own personal demons begin to come back to haunt her, driving her to the brink. Finally there is a thunderous bang at the door, most likely the cops. Diane has a hallucination in the form of the two old people from the beginning, possibly a memory of her mediocre former life or maybe even some form of abuse, and she completely melts down, choosing to end her own life with a bullet to the head. A dead body in the bed.

    ------------------------

That's a quick Cliff's Notes version. I know I skipped some stuff, but that's the general idea. If any of you still have questions I'll be happy to take them. I think this is one of the most brilliant movies ever made and have watched it many times. So fire away.

Thanks ecilam. Also, the link from before tells pretty much the same thing. I'm getting ready to watch it again - but mainly for the lesbian scene. :)
