    That's exactly right. I think these are the things that move us as men. We're not as likely to get misty-eyed over sentimentalism, pity stories or fluffy romances. The power of story inspires us with examples of heroism, love of family, true friendship, loyalty, or beating adversity. Noble virtues like these span every culture and most religions... they're timeless, colorless, and borderless. That's why they get to us on a personal level.

    We can see a moving tale of, for example, a warrior of olden times going to war against some oppressive enemy... we enjoy the kick-ass battle scenes, but the whole point of the story might really be the love the hero has for his family or his loyalty to a long-time friend. We'll never know what it's like to wage war against the Roman Empire or face off with bandits in the Old West, but we can watch the actions of the Hero and take that as a symbol for what we can become, or try to be for those we call our own.

    As a wannabe storyteller myself, this stuff is imortant to me... :D carry on.
