Uncommon, but they do exist. Being secure in my masculinity, I'm not afraid to admit there are some damn good movies that actually got to me that way on the first watching... very rarely, in viewings to follow. Some of these include:

    Uncommon Valor
    Braveheart
    Big Fish
    8 Seconds
Lonesome Dove (don't think I shed any tears, but damn sure got a lump in my throat)
Return of the King (ditto Lonesome Dove)

Strangely, Old Yeller is not on my list.

Seems to me that if you were secure in your masculinity you wouldn't cry.

The riders of the Riddermark about to charge... When Theoden rides by the Rhohirrim clanging their swords, and the camera pans out to the field to show what they face...

I mightta got a little misty eyed.

The emotional tug there is the purity of their purpose and their lack of fear. No second guessing. They were going to ride right into the heart of darkness and the maw of certain death, and did not fear it (I know I recited Psalm 23:4 in my mind). A hopeless chance, but a chance nonetheless to strike out at pure evil and hate. I'd have followed Theoden on that charge. It's called fantasy though for a reason. Nothing in life is that black and white. Wish it was. Life would be simpler and it would be invigorating to have such purpose.

Great flick though. Same with the others you mentioned.
