They are cult bands. Cult bands are not supposed to be universally liked, they appeal to a certain niche. That niche will therefore be rabid. Jambands appeal of course to those with hipple asthetic, but also those who enjoy a certain jazz oriented approach to improv in their rock and roll. Me, I think Phish is too popular now. I hate having to fight and scratch to get tickets.

    Beatles? WTF? wow

Huey Lewis.... I like him though. I saw that concert in '85 and I thought they we're a tight band. Especially the sax. They never did a whole lot after that, but I had a great time.

Has anybody seen the movie Huey was in? Duets. Pretty funny actually, about karaoke. And the chick that plays Hueys daughter, I forget her name, she is so hot and she can flat out sing. It's not all about Huey though, he just plays a part, but the whole thing is funny.

There's this one scene at the beginning when he hustles this guy at a karaoke bar, I LMAO.

GD. Well, I can't get into all their stuff, but I think they do other peoples songs the greatest. I've only seen them 4 times, and each was it's own adventure.

  4. you don't have to suck to be over-rated. the beatles are a great band, but I don't think they are hands down the greatest ever like so many folks do. I dare say, the music is a bit simplistic at times. good 4 minute pop songs, but nothing terribly compelling. they broke up before they could pull a rolling stones or aerosmith. pink floyd showed what could be done in that era.

"Jimi Hendrix died early enough into his career that people projected where he might go and sorta gave it to him...."

I agree that this was the case. But, IMO, he got/deserves
the honor by default; there weren't any rock players at the
time playing as well as he was; e.g. neat/pleasant tone, while
    still "rocking."

  6. Yeah... I wouldn't call him totally over-rated. But I grew up being told he was the icon of rock guitar greatness. Maybe it's lost on me in the age of guitar wizardry. And maybe his acheivements are lessened by the fact that others can so easily ellicit the same sounds from their guitars now that he's shown them the light. Also, I suspect a little more focus on his part would have made a ton of difference. But can you give somebody praise for their unattained potential rather than the fruits of their labor?

    >>you don't have to suck to be over-rated.

That's my view, which is why I refrain from listing bands that make me hurl, like Bon Jovi or Poisen.

    >>good 4 minute pop songs, but nothing terribly compelling.

True, though they did push the envelope on what you could do to make a 4 minute pop song compellng. Sgt. Pepper is overrated, but the White Albmun, Revolver and Abbey Road, doors just opened up for other bands to walk through with those songs. It doesn't get any weirder yet popish than "Everybody's Got Something to Hide But Me And My Monkey."

    >>pink floyd showed what could be done in that era.

Yep. PATGOD was largely an extention of Sgt. Pepper, DSOTM related to Abbey Road in the way the songs were suegued together.

I know what you're saying. But the answer to your question
(unless it was rhetorical) is a resounding yes! They're one and
    the same.
That's what rock, and especially jazz is all about..IMO(?).
The journey is the results; e.g. getting there is being there.

    my choices

Sex Pistols. Johnny Rotten was just a spoiled bastard that needed his ass kicked. Same for Iggy Pop. Give me the Clash anyday.

Whoever said Clapton needs to step out and we can settle this peacefully. Yeah right a boot to the ass. Clapton is IMO the greatest guitarist PERIOD. With Stevie Ray Vaughn close behind.

I'll agree with the hair bands, Def Leppard, Poison, White Snake etc. Thank god they had their 15 minutes and left. But they could get some puusy :p

Tori Amos and Sarah McGlautlin (sp) never did anything along with Jefferson Airplane/Starship. Throw in Fleetwood Mac and especially Stevie Nicks. Saw them in concert and she was so stoned she fell off the stage.

You have to realize what they were playing with then. Just a few years before, the audience was louder than the Beatles could make noise. Now here comes Jimmy with a stack of Marshall's. Today, they can get more, with any sort of sound you want, with much less.

I wasn't really impressed with Jimmy until after I heard his entire Woodstock live performance. Forget about the feedback and Star Spangled Banner. Jimmy had a lot of Miles Davis in him. He knew how to weave melody out of thin air.

The only thing that he didn't do, was play with a group of musicians that were his equal. Band of Gypsies was an effort in that part, but he was still the star, they were just a tight backing band. I'd like to have heard him playing with Cream or something of that sort. That's what seperates Clapton from Jimmy, Clapton sought out musicians of a high caliber to play with, and they rubbed off on him.
