I really liked Edge coming out, never thought he'd be that damned good.

At least I won't need to buy a new jersey for some time.

I might be wrong, but I actually think that popularity played into the Morgan signing just as it likely did with Delhomme.

I guess its how you choose to evaluate a contract. At 5 years and $28 mil, or an average of $5.6 mil a year. In '07 and '08 do you really believe the best linebackers in the NFL will be playing under $28 mil contracts that average $5.6 mil a year. Ray Lewis has a base salary of $6.5 mil in '07 and you can be sure that by the time '07 gets here it will be higher. My point is that a 5 year $28 mil contract will be very good value in a couple of years when compared to the contracts being signed by the elite linebackers. It's like those who complained about the Moose's salary in his later years, but ignored that he was making less than $1 mil in 1998 and 1999 and being very productive. Imho to compare contracts you have to look at the entire contract, not just a particular base salary in a particular year.....that would inaccurately skew the evaluation.

And I'm saying that you're wrong.

#1) Dan Morgan is not one of the best linebackers in the NFL even when healthy.

#2) Our main rivals just signed a better middle linebacker for less overall money and less bonus money yet one more year on the contract.

#3) Yes, the best linebackers will probably still be making between $5 and $7 million per season in '07 and '08. Morgan is overpaid when compared to existing contracts for linebackers, and as you point out, future contracts are likely to be backloaded. That means that while they might average more over the full length of the contract, the actual numbers for '07 and '08 are likely to be the same size if not smaller than what Morgan will cost in those years.

Muhammad was still under his rookie contract in '98 and '99. He didn't sign his very expensive extension until January of 2000.

We will just have to disagree on that.

Yep! When healthy Morgan is one of the better LB'ers in the league.

I think the contract is in line with what I was thought it would be.

Now I expect we will resign Spoon for 5 years 18-20million.

Panther fans think he's one of the best linebackers in the league when healthy, principally because we've always wanted him to be one (and because the ignorant local media always said he was). How many times had you heard such things prior to 2004? Had anyone ever actually pointed out that Morgan's tackles per game totals prior to 2004 were below average? He's always been a liability in pass coverage, and he hasn't ever been a filler at the line of scrimmage (the one thing Towns was good at). Morgan does have very good range, and he does a pretty good job of wrapping up when he gets there, but that's it. He's an oft-injured version of Michael Barrow.

    Edit:
Actually my mistake. When you look at the numbers it's clear that he's never been as productive as Michael Barrow, but they're similar in style.
