Gambling probe extends to FSU players
By James L. Rosica, Tallahassee Democrat Staff Writer

Florida State University's police chief Wednesday confirmed that a joint local-state investigation of on-campus gambling extends to FSU football players and other students connected with the school's athletics department.

Authorities had previously confirmed that they were investigating numerous unsubstantiated allegations that former quarterback Adrian McPherson was involved in gambling. McPherson was kicked off the team and later arrested in connection with a check stolen from a Tallahassee business. McPherson's lawyer, Grady Irvin of St. Petersburg, has denied that the 19-year-old placed any bets.

On Wednesday, FSU Police Chief Carey Drayton said authorities also are investigating gambling allegations against other players, student trainers and managers in the university's athletics department, and other students on campus.

But Drayton said there is much investigators still don't know.

"I have heard of others being involved, and that's what we're looking into: Who are the others?" he said.

Asked what "involved" meant, Drayton said that meant allegations of gambling had been made against them.

Irvin on Wednesday declined comment on the latest twist because McPherson had not been named again in the investigation.

FSU head coach Bobby Bowden said he knew police were looking into allegations of sports gambling in the community. But he said no law enforcement official, including Drayton, has talked to him about specific football players.

"I was aware they were thoroughly investigating the situation, which they should do," Bowden said. "I don't know of any involvement of any (specific) athlete.

"I would be shocked if any of my players are involved in that. But you never know. You're just nearly scared to say. I haven't heard rumors or talk among our kids that anybody is involved in something like that."

Bowden said he and the FSU staff speak to his players about sports gambling.

"All the time. Just like going to class," Bowden said. "We start the year off with that. We bring in law enforcement people to talk to our kids - to talk about the danger. We really hit gambling hard because it's such a big thing with the NCAA. They sure have been told."

Drayton, whose department is working with Tallahassee police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, said he expected no immediate arrests.

"This is going to be an involved and lengthy process," he said, adding that he hoped to wrap up the probes by late January.

As he explained it, there are two parallel investigations: One was sparked by an unidentified informant on the FSU campus who said he was being shaken down over an unpaid gambling debt.

That investigation, Drayton said, involves TPD and FDLE and may have statewide illegal gambling connections.

The other investigation is what Drayton called a "due diligence inquiry" into persistent rumors that McPherson was involved in gambling.

Drayton on Wednesday said that the investigations may be related, adding, "I don't believe at all that it's isolated to two people."

"I already have people ready to 'fess up to us," Drayton said. But he would not comment on the statements he expects to get, saying only that they were not football players.

Yet another gambling investigation at Florida A&M University has not yet been related to either probe at FSU.

Also heard Milton Kirk mentioned FSU, UGA, Kent, Ark (?) in the Albert Means trial. I'm sure nothing will come of it though.
