Getting your second win in 13 games still doesn't earn you respect. Sorry.

This was before the game? Is shaking hands before the game even a tradition. I thought it was after the game that you shake hands. I have no problem with JD not participating in Doh's little "Take it easy on us" charade.

It must not be for dookies. I know teams that I played basketball on or coached always did. I guess it just isn't that important to dook.

So you don't agree with my thoughts on sportsmanship?

To be honest with you, outside of maybe church league I have never seen basketball coaches at any level regularly shake hands before the game. Only exception being in instances like Coach K playing Coach Amaker and are actually good friends. No this was out of the ordinary and thus not poor sportsmanship. Doh wanted to cool some emotions and Dawkins wanted to keep his players fired up. Apparently it worked.

sly we are from the same town, not that big you know. I have coached Rec. baseball and basketball and the coaches have always shaked hands. This is my first year coaching here in Greenville and guess what we do the same thing. Is it a standard? I doubt it! But I have never and I mean never been in a situation where I went to a coach or one came to me to shake hands and we didn't. Coaches shaking hands has nothing to do with winning the game and if that is what wins you the game then you have bigger problems to worry about. Coach K and even chrissy collins did, so what's dawkins gripe? Nothing other than being a baby and holding a grudge from the week before, sounds like a sore loser to me.

if my son didn't shake the other teams hand after a game I would hope you sat his ass on the bench the next game.

I coached my daughters soccer team when she was seven. These kids were like the bad news bears - lost first five games of the year - always close - but always losing. But they made a miracle run - won the last two games of the season then rolled to the championship game - had to play the "select team" undefeated - of course there wasn't supposed to be a select team but the caoch made sure he stacked his roster.

well not only did we win the game - but we crushed them. At the end when the other team shook hands in the line each girl told our team "you suck" - their coach praised them instead of admonishing them for being poor sports.

I would hate for an asshole like that to coach one of my kids. Yeah you want to teach them to play hard and fight to the end - but when its over congratulations go to he winner. That goes for coaches too.

afterall - its just a game...

I think there is probably a difference between Rec and Varsity....I don't remember coach Flowers shaking hands with anyone. I'm not trying to question you just state that I don't think it is a tradition for college coaches to shake hands before the game. I also find it hard to beleive that the events of the week before would be the only reason Dawkins didn't shake his hand. However, being that none of us are privy to private conversations or past history between the two I could see how you could jump to that conclusion. I have personally refused to shake hands with players in softball, basketball and football when there is bad blood between us whether we win or lose. I shake hands with the rest of the team as did Dawkins. My point is a personal snub to Doherty in a unique situation is hardly classless.

This could be the case, but now this private situation is now made public. Just sends out a bad message now matter how you look at it.

I know sports I played in school other than football we had to shake the other teams hand. But I only played sports 2 years in Rock Hill, prior to that I played sports in Chapel Hill and we always did. But you mentioned Coach flowers, so sure it may be different for different coaches as I never played for him. But again, I am also talking about the coach, so you are telling me that Coach Flowers never shook a hand prior to a game or refused to do so?

I always would shake a person's hand whether I agreed with them, like them or not. I did this in school, after school, whether Rec or Church league.

I am not saying you have to do it, but if somebody sticks their hand out, don't be an ass like dawkins was.
