    Tar Heels not done yet
Williams would like to bring in another recruit

    By BARRY SVRLUGA, Staff Writer

CHAPEL HILL -- New basketball coach Roy Williams, who said Thursday he has been in 11 states in the past six days while recruiting, said North Carolina may bring in another recruit for next season.
Winston-Salem swingman Reyshawn Terry is UNC's only recruit for 2003-04, and the Tar Heels could use another big man to help Sean May inside.

But "I don't want to take somebody that can't help us," Williams said. "I don't want to take an average guy, because I think sometimes you get too many average guys."

Linas Kleiza, a 6-foot-8 forward from Rockville, Md., is one of the few unsigned big men still worth pursuing. But Kleiza appears to be leaning toward Missouri.

THE DOTTED LINE: Williams said he hasn't signed his UNC contract yet, though he added that only "minor changes" would have to be made. He plans to talk to athletics director Dick Baddour about his deal this month.

Williams also said his contracts with athletics apparel maker Nike and Learfield Communications, for his radio and television shows, have not been finalized, either. Those two deals will push his annual compensation to more than $1 million. He'll get a $260,000 salary from his eight-year contract with UNC.

ON THE SCHEDULE: Most of next year's non-conference schedule has been set, though Williams said he was pursuing two more games: one in or near Cleveland, the hometown of forward Jawad Williams, and one in South Carolina, the home state of point guard Raymond Felton, though that game will not be against the Gamecocks.

The Heels also will play at Kentucky and at home against Connecticut, Miami, Old Dominion and Maine. They will play Davidson in Charlotte and an undetermined opponent in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, probably in Greensboro.

NOEL'S SCHOLARSHIP: Williams said he would give forward David Noel, a walk-on as a freshman last year, a scholarship for the rest of his UNC career. Former coach Matt Doherty had promised Noel one while recruiting him, although the Heels had used their allotment last year.

"I'm going to try to stick up to every commitment that Matt made," Williams said.

That means Jesse Holley, an incoming freshman receiver on the football team, would be allowed to walk on to the basketball team, as would Justin Bohlander, a 6-7 forward from Winston-Salem.

TIDBITS: Thomas McKinney, the Heels' strength and conditioning coach for two seasons under Doherty, will remain with Carolina. ... May, who sat out most of his freshman season because of a broken left foot, is still feeling some pain but is participating in pickup games, drills and conditioning. An examination Wednesday showed nothing major wrong with the foot.

It is going to take a lot of work to get him since we are jumping in the game so late. I would be very surprised if we could get him at all at this point.

Yep, that proves you know absolutely nothing about the game. Why don't you go play with your action figures while us real men discuss sports.
