The team went to the Super Bowl in year 2, I'd say he handled the situation just fine.

If I remember correctly, didn't the team pretty much say that Peete was more a temporary thing and that Weinke was still their long term plan when they made the original switch? Not that I personally would do it, but I could see how someone might be upset in that situation.

yeah. plus to a point, those decisions roll downhill. Just as a reluctant 2009 rookie would've meant no Moore on roster, a dedication to hand Weinke the job against their apparent want* would mean no Delhomme signing, and love him or hate him he did better than Weinke in the same time. They may have also missed on a potential star in Clausen if they'd had a 2009 2nd round reach on staff, too.

*also keep in mind they didn't really flinch on Peete benching until 17 won the 2nd job outright with an 11 for 11, 121 yd, 2td game 4 of 03 preseason. Until then, 16 was playing best of anyone.

I would think that playing the somewhat promising second year QB would be better for the team than playing the old guy at the end of his lack luster career. Unless Twinky played lights out in 2002 we probably still go get Delhomme.

I always assumed they said that just to keep him happy short term, not a guarantee or anything like that, but if Weinke bought that then I could see a problem.

the idea was to try to win some games and develop some confidence/enthusiasm, which Peete gave Fox a better chance of than weinke. young QBs are often served better being backups than being tossed into the fray before their ready which can forever shake their confidence. not saying that it mattered with weinke but i can see no good reason to have started him in place of Peete. weinke was horrible. he couldn't beat out either jack or rodney and he never developed into a QB that gave anybody any confidence in him.

and oh, the team says a lot of things which aren't true. they weren't going to come out and say we think weinke is total crap whether they believed that or not. probably thought he was crap but took a long-shot on him developing some courage and leadership. and you know ... that loyalty thing.

and even that last preseason game didn't win jake the job. not only that but they were still a lot of fans calling for weinke to start. all jake's performance did was cause Fox to pull the trigger faster than he may have liked.

twinky never showed any signs of promise. and no we probably don't go get Jake when weinke sucks it up in 2002 as we probably woulda gone 1-15 again and we draft Carson Palmer, can Fox, and promote Jack Del Rio. Course we don't get Gross and Palmer gets creamed early in the season and we never go to the Superbowl. and the shit keeps rolling downhill.

As bad as our 1-15 team was I thought Winky did OK. For a rookie starting on a sucky team he was OK. None of it matters now anyway.

Weinke was ok, but nothing spectacular. I remember him as holding the ball too long and taking unnecessary sacks. I also remember him as not being able to read the defense very well. However, he was a rookie.

the black cat curse got a good hold on him...
his 2nd win as a starter was the atlanta game. started 1 game for the niners...a loss of course. he was sued in 2009 for securities fraud. is now director of something called the img madden football academy, what ever the hell that is.
