Channel 7 in detroit reported mooch is in town...jay (??) was the sports guy's name.

parker (detroit news) is saying his sources tell him the fords want mooch as their coach and the resistance is coming from millen.

the lions have the vp of player personell position open because they fired tobin back in dec. Mooch wants VP PP responsibilites. Millen is trying to hire the guy from the rams for that position...the guy who drafted bellisorry, couch, and ryan pinkett....millen is actually willing to give up draft picks to get him.

    Mariucci buzz won't die

    Tuesday, January 21, 2003

    By Tom Kowalski

ALLEN PARK -- The buzz about the possible hiring of Steve Mariucci by the Detroit Lions won't go away.

Mariucci, who was recently fired as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, has said publicly that he's going to sit out a year and do television work before possibly returning to coaching in 2004.

However, Lions president Matt Millen has been interviewed several times about Mariucci and has refused to support current head coach Marty Mornhinweg. Millen has declined to say anything about the subject, allowing speculation that Millen's support for Mornhinweg isn't as strong as it was earlier this month, when Millen announced that Mornhinweg would coach the Lions next season.

Several sources have indicated Millen was considering making a change at head coach following Detroit's 3-13 season, before finally deciding to keep Mornhinweg.

Adding to the speculation is that several phone calls to Lions officials were unreturned Monday, a sign that news could be brewing.

Millen was initially interested in Mariucci four years ago when there were rumors that Millen would become president of the Lions. When Millen got the job two years later, Mariucci was already under a long-term contract with the 49ers.

Rumors of a Mariucci hiring persist on the Internet and one Detroit television station reported a rumor Sunday night that Mariucci was in town, though the station acknowledged that it was just an unsubstantiated rumor.

    Stay tuned.
