If you think teams would pass on Beason to "punish" him, then I think you're naive. Chances are 99.9% that the two sides eventually agree on something, but if Beason did go back into the draft next year, he'd go where his talent dictated, not drop because anyone else was looking out for Carolina. In any case, between his agent saying that we're asking for very unusual things in the contract and Hurney saying he's not even sure if they'll talk again, it sure does look like the Panthers are the ones screwing this up.

Agree with the weird shit, but wasn't Williams projected even higher had he been allowed to be included in the draft pool when he declared?

Okay, I looked for some pre 4/20/04 mocks (prior to him being declared out of the draft) and most are post 4/20 (appropriate that he's be declared out on 4/20 considering his recreational habits). I did find SI's '04 mock with Williams included and they had him going #3. I guess it's all debatable, but the $ @ 10 isn't what the $ @ 3 would be. It wasn't my intention to focus on the money though.

Anyhow, Beason had nowhere near the (perceived) stature that Williams had. And what did Williams do after a year out of ball, despite where he was drafted? I'll concede it might have been the same, performance wise, for him if he'd gone his first year but it's just speculation.

My comment was intended to refer to the possibility that he lost the edge sitting out a year and it hurt him that way. I can see that wasn't totally clear.

edit: I don't believe it was 4/20 he was declared out, but 4/23/04, so my little joke was based on false info.

Maybe not punish him, but who wants to take a chance on losing a draft pick on someone who's already held out for a year?

Regardless, I agree, he'll sign. I don't see how the Panthers could screw it up if he's already slotted, but something sure doesn't sound good.

edit: His 'talent' takes a hit if he goes back into the NFL draft, was my only point.

If he only held out because Hurney insisted on something ridiculous, I can't imagine that would bother other teams at all.

No way on earth he'd hold out two years in a row much less one.

Yeah I agree. And after re-reading Gannts blog, for some reason I transposed the two sides.

wtf are we doing? Asking him to take 3rd round money if Morgan doesn't get hurt and Beason doesn't start?

    That's really fucked up.
