I really thought Holmgren would end up there.

He's an okay coach, and sentimentality almost makes me want to root for him to do well, but given the vat of former OCs already out of work that aren't that great, and the fact that Nolan's only a defensive guy, I don't like how it looks. Plus, the front office there now is absolute crap, they still don't have a GM, and they're not going to be getting the top assistants they'd need around a younger, inexperienced HC.

The Faggie9ers will continue to suck from top to bottom.

The 49ers are doomed due to ownership. No decent coach would have taken that job. Nolan is only doing it because he has never been a head coach and it is step up for him. They are not going to get any better until they have better ownership.

The more I read about this guy, the more I like him. It would be nice to see the 49ers become competitive again. I hope the front office will actually spend some money on players now. Nolan really does sound a lot like Fox and Herm Edwards in regards to relationships with the players.

“It’s hard to find defensive coordinators who trust their players. I am talking about the players who he knows are going to put in the work and come to work every day. He gives you flexibility to go play football. When you see Mike talk, he is very energetic. When you see that in a coach, that gives energy to the players. I don’t know if Mike is too far from Marvin [Lewis, Baltimore’s former defensive coordinator]. The way they speak, their terminology— it’s almost identical.” – Ray Lewis, Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens

“Congratulations to both of them, I think that it is a good fit. I played for Mike a long time ago and have been a friend since then. I loved him back then and I still love him now, I am happy that he finally got an opportunity, probably a little bit later than I thought he would get an opportunity to coach a team, but I am glad he finally got that chance.” – Michael Strahan, Defensive End, New York Giants

“He has as solid and as comprehensive a feel for the entire game, and I’m talking on and off the field, as any coach that I have been around. The fact is that he literally grew up in the NFL, with his dad being a head coach and a long-time coach in the NFL. He has an easy demeanor with the players, yet he still has the ability to command that authority and command that presence, to crack the whip when necessary, but still do it in a way that the players know that he is approachable and that he can interact with them and has their best interests in mind.” – Brian Billick, Head Coach, Baltimore Ravens

I've been thinking about him, and while I don't have a particularly great feeling about Brian Billick as a HC, I'll give him tons of credit for being willing to let his assistants go (JDR to us, another guy to assist JDR in JAX, Lewis, etc.) and still getting the Nolans and the Singletaries and the Rex Ryans to replenish. He stashed Nolan as a WRs coach for a year anticipating the Marvin Lewis departure and it kept his team afloat through a cap crisis.

I don't have much opinion on the potential signing of Leslie Frasier as DC, but I think they're looking in the right spots for a GM. One of my sources out west says that York is truly willing to spend a little bit more to not be a laughingstock, and that he/they don't want to be screwing up the team just for the ability to have a say.

The thing I do not get with the 49ers is that they went thru a salary cap purge the last year Steve Young played. Then they went thru one again last year. How did they get in cap trouble again so quickly? Did they not purge it all the first time? At least when we did it we got it done.

20 million under cap, and the first pick in the draft. Now to convince people to come play there

Bite your damn tongue on that one - all we talk about now is whether we have cap to pay Moose because we gave our line huge bonuses.

The 9ers went through a minor cap purge again, but as much as anything, Erickson just wasn't very good. In the end, they paid a lot of money to keep Plummer, Barlow, and Peterson, and probably won't get a lot of return on that, compared to the money laid out. They also dismantled the OL and WR for apparently no reason.
