I for one have more than had it with the Mike Krzyzewski hype. We all know that the media, with its terrible tendency to feed on itself, cannot get enough of him. Mike Patrick and Dick Vitale proclaim how his coaching skills are so universally perfect that he could coach the USA Bobsled team to a gold medal -- six months before he failed to coach a team of NBA All-Stars to one. New York Times writer Michael Sokolove writes a novella length lovefest piece entitled, “Follow Me,” in which he describes Coach K as a “motherly coach,” and all but nominates him for a Nobel Peace Prize. Time magazine writer Sean Gregory pens an article entitled “Coach K Gets Down to Business,” the basic theme of which is how lucky we as a nation are to have the great coach to lead our national team back to the gold. Mike Ventre calls him the closest thing to royalty in college basketball. And on and on the adulation goes.

Well enough is enough. If the media wants to ignore Krzyzewski’s shortcomings and place him on an undeserved moral and professional pedestal, so be it. But it is high time that someone expose him for the overrated, egotistical, self-centered man that he is. I will take on this seemingly impossible task through a series of blogs. In an effort to be objective, I will first – and, please, pardon the pun – give the Devil his due by recognizing the coaching facets with which he clearly does excel. From there, I will expose several myths from which Krzyzewski’s reputation has been absurdly embellished. I will close with the longest segment, which enumerates the man’s many shortcomings as a college coach.

Opening Concessions

Fairness dictates that we give credit where it is due. No doubt, a coach does not enjoy K’s level of success without being good, perhaps even great, in at least some elements of the profession. Here are the coaching facets in which K admittedly is strong.

First, he is a tremendous motivator. He demands an intense style of play, and his players respond by playing their guts out for him. Anyone who has played the game can attest to how exhausting intense man-to-man defense is to play. His players do it all game, every game, with a bloodhound enthusiasm. I definitely get the impression that his players would do anything for the man, which is admittedly the mark of a good leader.

Second, his teams are always fundamentally sound. Very seldom will you see a bad pass, a failure to get back on defense, or a player out-hustled for a rebound or loose ball. Mental mistakes are rare. When was the last time you saw a Duke player make a bonehead play? It is said that there are three elements of the game that good coaching can directly control: player stamina, defense, and free throws. K’s teams are always rock solid in each department.

Finally, there’s no getting around his recruiting skills. We certainly can, and later will, debate how much he does with his high school All-Americans, but there’s no doubt that K has a golden touch for bringing in the cream of the crop. It’s fair to say that K picks his recruits, rather than the other way around, an advantage that only accomplished coaches enjoy.

But that’s about it. After careful thought, and a lifetime of watching the man, I personally can identify no other coaching skills in which Coach K is above average. True, he is credited with excelling in many more areas, but these take us only to the myths from which K's reputation has been mightily overinflated.

Mythical Excellence

To fairly assess Krzyzewski, it is essential to dispel a variety of myths upon which his favorable reputation is based. First is the notion that he single-handedly built Duke into a national basketball power. Initially, after his run of tournament successes during the 1980’s, he was credited with having “rebuilt” the Duke program. Over the years, as a younger generation infiltrated the base of college basketball fans, the misconception morphed into the fallacy that Coach K exclusively placed Duke on the college basketball map. Last season, for example, in response to a message board post asking why K is credited with rebuilding the Duke program, a college fan responded, “Dude, he didn’t rebuild it. He made the first brick and laid it down.”

A startlingly small percentage of current basketball fans understand that Duke basketball success actually began decades before K ever heard of Durham, North Carolina. The general public seems to have forgotten Vic Bubbas, who, during the 1960s, took Duke to three final fours, including a national title game appearance. Bill Foster took them to another national championship game appearance in 1978. Indeed, the season before K’s arrival ended with a regional final appearance. In his first “rebuilding year” at Duke, Krzyzewski himself inherited the following All-Conference players from that same Elite Eight squad: Gene Banks, Vince Taylor, and Kenny Dennard. Not exactly the broken program that he is credited with miraculously fixing, is it?

A second myth is the belief that Krzyzewski uses great coaching ability to develop his recruits into complete players. This misconception began to hatch early in K’s career when he landed star recruits who came to Duke with already well-rounded games. Johnny Dawkins, a gifted shooter, passer, and ball handler, and Mark Alarie, a do everything forward of the Larry Bird mold, are the classic examples. Throw in a Grant Hill and an Elton Brand later down the road, and college fans naturally began to assume that coaching must have contributed to the pedigree. But the fact is that each of these players came to Duke with exceptional talent and a multi-dimensional game. Inundated by commercials in which K touts his desire to see players “leave here with more than just a great jump shot,” and the nonstop drivel of Dick Vitale, the public has happily bought into the belief that Krzyzewski is the maker of the total player.

But what a bunch of bunk this is. A far better argument can be made that K retards player progress. Just look at the outright regression that such heralded recruits as Erik Meek, Cherokee Parks, Jeff Capel, Chris Collins, Trajan Langdon, Taymon Domzalski, Ricky Price, Nate James, and Shavlick Randolph suffered during their underachieving Duke careers. The vast majority of his other high profile players leave Duke with the same skills that they arrived with four years earlier. Take JJ Redick for instance. He came to Duke renowned as a great perimeter shooter. Four years later, he left Duke with an ACC scoring title and, make no mistake, a great outside shot. But he had no better passing game, as his senior season 2.2 assists per game reflect. He left Duke with no noticeably improved ball-handling skills and with average, at best, defensive skills. He also graduated with zero growth in the maturity/composure category, as the hideous performance in his career ending loss to LSU and his DWI shortly thereafter demonstrated.

And just look at the rest of last year’s pre-season number one team. Sean Dockery left Duke an embarrassment, remembered most for shoving Tyler Hansbrough in the face as UNC thumped Duke in Cameron on senior night. Lee Melchionni also checked out as a relative laughing stock. And does anyone believe K’s coaching will convert Greg Paulus into the next Kenny Anderson?

Aside from the above, consider the many high school All-Americans who the man never plays. Eric Boateng and Jamal Boykin are just the most recent examples. No one knows K’s shortcomings in the area of player development better than these two players and the plethora of other highly rated prospects who transferred out of Duke. Part of the problem here is K’s insistence on running scores up on undermanned opponents instead of giving his developing players game experience. We see it year after year, usually during the non-conference cupcake schedule. K routinely rubs the noses of Division II opponents into 40 point drubbings, while leaving his underclassmen on the bench until the final few minutes of play. Is this the stuff of a great coach?

Still unconvinced that Coach K underperforms in the critical coaching area of player development? (For original segment, see first post at http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/lloydjack/53338). Just look at the NBA records of the relatively few Duke players who have played at this level. A classic case in point is Danny Ferry, the 1989 Naismith Player of the Year, who went on to post a career 7 ppg average on 45% shooting. It was because of these stats that he earned the number 10 ranking in SI.com’s list of all time NBA draft busts. Ferry is far from an anomaly. Duke players are legendary for their NBA futility. Mark Alarie, Johnny Dawkins, David Henderson, Billy King, Robert Brickey, Phil Henderson, Kevin Strickland, Danny Ferry, Alaa Abdelnaby, Brian Davis, Antonio Lang, Cherokee Parks, Trajan Langdon, William Avery, Shane Battier, Dahntay Jones, Chris Carrawell, Mike Dunleavy -- the list is seemingly endless. Each of these players either completely failed or substantially under performed vis-à-vis his college record.

And yet perhaps the most revealing evidence of K’s poor player development comes from the handful of his players who have actually enjoyed NBA success. How can that be? Because all but one – Grant Hill – left Duke early, before K and his assistant staff of pro busts neutralized or reversed their incoming professional potential. Elton Brand left after two years; Corey Maggette checked out after one; same for Luol Deng. Carlos Boozer, the only other Coach K product to enjoy success in the NBA, hit the road after three years of school. How can anyone actually believe that K develops his players when they so consistently fail at the next level and when the rare success exceptions are those who escape his tutelage prematurely?

The next myth that has grossly over inflated K’s image is that of Duke as a squeaky clean Camelot program. We never hear of Phil Henderson’s arrest for child support violations or his plan to leave the country in order to dodge future obligations. What about Greg Newton’s cheating on an exam? Normally a cause for expulsion, Newton’s violation was conveniently swept under the rug as he was allowed to continue to throw elbows in an effort to compensate for a dearth of low post skills. Ricky Price received similar favoritism after a plagiarism scandal. Corey Maggette was caught in a clear NCAA recruiting violation for which Duke received nothing in the way of punishment. Remember when Matt Christensen charged a referee after Duke’s title game loss to UConn? Shortly thereafter Krzyzewski gives him a team award for being the player who most symbolizes Duke basketball. How about the sleazy manner with which Carlos Boozer’s father and Chris Duhon’s mother secured employment, reportedly from big wig Duke fans shortly after their sons’ arrivals on campus?

J.J. Redick started his Duke career being busted in a dorm room full of pot but somehow had his charges dropped. Four years later, even with the representation of Duke law instructor and self-proclaimed litigation extraordinaire Donald Beskind, Redick could do nothing more than plead guilty to a DUI offense. The media shows minimal interest in A.D. Joe Alleva’s son being charged with a DUI after a serious boating accident. The list goes on and on and on, literally from day one of the Coach K era. But precious few know that recently disbarred lawyer Larry Linney, a member of K’s first Duke roster, received his mail in the penitentiary due to a criminal conviction arising from his decision to steal $10,000.00 from a dead client’s estate.

Finally, we have the myth that Duke is a college basketball utopia where players, under K’s fatherly hand, live in perfect harmony through graduation. His players stay and graduate is all we hear. How many times have you heard the tired line that Krzyzewski has a stunningly high player graduation rate, usually around 96% or so? Well, there are quite a few problems with this. First, the statistic conveniently omits the Duke players who left the school for the NBA with no degree. They include:

• Corey Maggette
• Elton Brand
• Mike Dunleavy
• William Avery
• Jason Williams
• Carlos Boozer
• Luol Deng
• Shavlik Randolph

As far as I know, none of these guys obtained degrees from Duke, and certainly none did while under Coach K’s tutelage. Of course this did not stop Duke from running an advertisement in NBA League Pass in which it touted Mike Dunleavy and Luol Deng as “Duke alumni,” but that’s another subject for another day.

The other major flaw to this suggestion that K’s program is one big happy family with an amazing graduation rate is that it wholly ignores the boatload of players who transferred out of the place long before graduating. They include:

• Billy McCaffrey, a McDonald’s High School AA who transferred to Vanderbilt after the 1991 season;
• Crawford Palmer, another McDonald’s High School AA who transferred to Dartmouth after the ’91 campaign;
• Christian Ast (transferred to American University in 1992);
• Greg Wendt (transferred to Detroit after the 1983 season);
• D. Bryant (two-sport star, who, after the 1999 season, failed out of school and transferred to Youngstown State);
• Joey Beard (McDonald’s AA transferred to Boston University after the ’93 season);
• Mike Chappell (Parade All-American transferred to Michigan State after 1998 season);
• Chris Burgess (McDonald’s AA transferred to Utah after 1999 season);
• Andre Sweet (transferred to Seton Hall after 2001 season);
• Mark Causey (transferred to North Georgia after 2002 season);
• Michael Thompson (transferred to Northwestern after 2004 season);
• Eric Boateng (transferred to Arizona State after 2006 season)
• Jamal Boykin (Gatorade California player of the year, announced transfer to California during 2006 season)

A review of this list is quite the eye-opener for most basketball followers. The average fan recalls having heard perhaps a Duke transfer story or two through the years. But by and large, the vast majority of even informed college hoops followers have no idea what a revolving door Duke’s program has become. What does this tell us about the wonderfully wholesome, Family Affair environment that the media attempts to portray? And don’t forget, for the student-athlete a college transfer is a tremendously difficult decision to make. The NCAA makes it difficult, requiring a transferee to sit out an entire season before returning to the floor with the new school. It tends to be very damaging for an athlete’s career prospects – how many from the above list were ever heard from again?

That such a startlingly high number of players have chosen to take the difficult path of transferring to new schools should be enough in itself to debunk this particular K-Myth. But more importantly, it certainly demonstrates the absurdity of the claim that K graduates 96% of his players. If we assume that K, over his 27 years at Duke, has recruited an average of four players a year, he has brought in roughly 108 players. Using the 96% rate, only 5 would have failed to graduate from Duke. The above lists combine for over five times that many players who never saw a Duke sheepskin. And that is without even getting into the following list of players who have vanished from Duke rosters through the years after a year or two on the team: Kenny Brown, George Burgin, Andy Berndt, Ron Burt, Dave Colonna, Joe Cook, Ray Essex, Richard Fox, Ned Franke, Jon Goodman, Bill Jackman. Each of these players dropped from the roster, mostly during the 1980s, without explanation on the Duke Basketball Update website. In fairness, it is unknown whether these particular players left the team on bad terms, or whether they went on to graduate from Duke. It is, however, clear that none of these eleven players finished what they started with Coach K, the great maker of men.

Now that the more popular myths have been dispelled (See http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/lloydjack/, let’s turn to some facets of the college coach’s job description where Krzyzewski rates well below average under any objective assessment.

Inability/refusal to make adjustments. In most team sports, great coaches are known for making strategy adjustments, both before and during games. Joe Gibbs, at least during his first tenure as the Washington Redskins head coach, was a master of this skill. He frequently led undermanned teams to conference championships by thoroughly scouting opponents, maximizing his team’s strengths, and masking their weaknesses. We see it in college basketball all of the time. Dean Smith, for example, regularly beat Duke with lower ranked teams during Duke’s national championship years of 1991-92 by throwing motion offenses at the Laettner-led Dukies. Smith also had his teams execute backdoor cuts with razor sharp precision to burn Duke defenders as they overplayed their men. Bobby Knight pulled off a huge upset of a number one seeded UNC led by Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins by gluing a player to Jordan’s jersey throughout a 1984 regional semifinal game in Atlanta. Lefty Driesell did the same to Ralph Sampson led Virginia. P.J. Carlesimo led the Seton Hall Pirates to one of the Final Four’s greatest comebacks by turning a huge halftime deficit into a 17 point win over Duke in the 1989 national semifinal. Jim Valvano painted a De Vinci when his Wolfpack upset Houston for the 1983 title with a series of tempo changes that kept the Cougars off balance through most of the title game.

It is a skill that Krzyzewski has never even considered learning. Apparently viewing it as a concession or sign of weakness, K stubbornly refuses to make adjustments. Year after year, in each and every game, he insists that his teams play nothing but man to man defense. In addition to basic zones, college coaches have a variety of defensive schemes that can be used to counter explosive scorers: the box and one, the triangle and two are examples. Krzyzewski never varies from his signature man to man. How many times has this dubious decision led his team into losses that could otherwise have been easily avoided? Last year’s season ending loss to LSU has to be considered a classic case in point. Can any objective observer honestly say that it was wise for a Duke team with no depth and slow players such as Greg Paulus, Lee Melchionni and J.J. Redick to man up against a team of such incredibly fast, strong, high-jumping athletes?

Sadly, the nation suffered the effects of this inane obstinance over the summer months when K was asked to restore order to the international world of basketball by returning the gold medal to our country. Many considered it a foregone conclusion that the USA would make quick work in thrashing all opposition. The great basketball genius Dick Vitale long ago stated his “simple formula:” Coach K + talent = W. So how could we lose with K at the helm of a ship of NBA All-Stars, the greatest talent available?

Pretty easily it turned out. Team USA went home with another embarrassing bronze after losing to a Greek team with no NBA players. Throughout that game, Greece scored off of an incredibly basic play: the pick and roll. Over and over and over again, two Greek players feasted off of this same play, which involves nothing more than its name states: a basic screen followed by the screener’s roll to the hole. We all learned it in middle school rec leagues. Now I ask you, how much coaching skill – or basic intelligence for that matter -- does it require to change over to a zone defense when your team is being eaten alive by this same play?

K is similarly loath to new ideas on the offensive end of the court. The LSU loss again provides a great example. Well into the second half of the game, after J.J. Redick had thrown up enough bricks to build a subdivision, K’s response was to take J.J. out of the game just long enough to encourage him to keep putting it up. Granted, J.J. was a senior star of the team, but what coach interested in advancing in a single elimination tournament would not have at least considered the possibility of advising J.J. to, for once in his career, consider passing the ball?

Throughout the season, Krzyzewski relied exclusively upon Redick and Shelden Williams for offensive production. Game after game we watched as Redick ran around that same high screen and launched his outside shot. No doubt, it carried the team through the regular season, but eventually the monotony caught up with them. By late February, Redick was exhausted and every coach knew well what was coming.

It is because of his inability to adjust within or before games that his teams so seldom upset an opponent, yet regularly fall victim to upsets. Think about it: when was the last time that one of K’s teams upset anybody? Yes, it is certainly true that Duke is usually the favored team, thus having fewer opportunity for upset wins. But the same was true for UNC in the 1980s and 1990s, and still Dean Smith was famous for them. Many times Smith upset the Dukies, often on their vaunted home court, by simply outcoaching his robotic, unimaginative counterpart. Bob Knight is another coach who, despite having perenially high rated teams, pulled many an upset during his IU days.

The simple truth is that K’s teams are perennially “upset” in the tournament, with the only question being by whom. LSU, Florida, Michigan State, Connecticut, Connecticut again, Indiana, Providence, Eastern Michigan, California, the list of contributors to K’s prodigious record of NCAA tournament upset losses goes on and on.

I love too how K is worshipped by the media for his great comeback wins in games that he was supposed to win. It’s easy to forget that Duke was the No. 1 seed in the 1992 regional final game against Kentucky and, therefore, favored to win. Instead, all we see, fifteen years later, is one replay after another of Laettner’s buzzer beater. You would think it symbolized some incredible upset victory by a classic American underdog rather than a one seed squeaking by to the next round. Similarly, in 2001 when Duke made its “miracle minute” comeback against Maryland, Duke was ranked No. 2 in the nation; Maryland was 8th. Duke was also the higher rated team, indeed a No. 1 seed, when it came back from 22 down, with the help of controversial officiating, to win the national semifinal against Maryland that same year.

The real question in these, and many other of Duke’s squeaker wins, is why did the team fall so far behind lower rated teams in the first place? Instead, all we hear from the media is one hyperbolic praise after another. My personal favorite is Mike Patrick’s proclamation that the previously mentioned “miracle minute” was “the most incredible thing I have ever seen.” Too bad Mike missed it when UNC made up 8 points in 17 seconds, with no three point line -- against Duke by the way.

So where else does Coach K fail to measure up to true greatness standards. Try the following:

No innovations – Many of the truly great basketball coaches left their marks, in part, by bringing innovations to the game. Dean Smith brought several with his changing and trapping defensive schemes, the four corners offense, the foul line huddle, the emphasis on pointing to the passer to encourage unselfish play. Bobby Knight perfected the motion offense. Roy Williams developed the greyhound up-tempo offense and mastered the secondary break. John Chaney perfected the match-up zone. Tex Winter brought the triangle offense to the game. Pete Carril was an upset specialist with his disciplined Princeton offense. Even Nolan Richardson refined the concept of full-court pressure defense with his “40 minutes of hell” defense.

So what innovation has Mike Krzyzewski brought to the game of college basketball – other than instructing his players to slap the floor?

Granted, there have been plenty of successful college coaches who have no innovations to their name. But the way the sports media gushes over Krzyzewski’s purported greatness, one would think he invented the game. It should come as no surprise that a coach incapable of intra-game adjustments has brought no true changes to the game. Still, the media refuses to acknowledge his lack of contributions and instead attempts to credit him with such “modern approaches” as emphasizing “team karma” and “emotional leadership.” Krzyzewski himself touts the following philosophy on his website, “A common mistake among those who work in sport is spending a disproportional amount of time on ‘x's and o's’ as compared to time spent learning about people.” Well, Coach, it is clear to this observer that “x’s and o’s” do not command too much of your time.

No use of the bench

The best coaches of basketball understand that it is more than a five man game. To excel over the course of an entire season, even the best conditioned athletes require reliable bench support. The potential for foul trouble also necessitates a reliable bench presence. In describing another basic reality that requires bench development, Al Maguire once said, “Injuries are a part of the game that are to be expected. That’s why you have a bench, and that’s why you buy your tape in May.”

It is recognition of this critical game component that often separates the successful from the unsuccessful basketball coaches. Rick Pitino, for instance, always has deep teams that can maintain a high level of intensity at both ends of the court. Same for Roy Williams. A masterful bench coach, Dean Smith constantly substituted players in response to changing game situations. It was the reason why several players who never started for UNC still enjoyed success in the same NBA where K’s starters routinely fail.

His futility in bench player development is probably the most overlooked of Krzyzewski’s shortcomings. Think about it for a moment. Ever notice how, season after season over the last 15 years, K lands one of the greatest all-time recruiting classes, usually consisting of 4-5 players? And yet, year after year, he has to combat “depth problems” and “player fatigue.”

Last season was a classic case in point. Right on schedule, Duke’s number one ranked team started sputtering in late February. They lost to FSU away and then lost to a freshman oriented UNC team on a Cameron senior night that, to hear media reports, was all but a nationally declared holiday. They then puttered into the NCAA tournament on fumes and dropped out to a fourth-seeded LSU team. In that game, JJ Redick built a small city of all brick structures because he was too worn out to carry the team any further.

Now go back four years. Coach K was being heralded for assembling yet another legendary recruiting class. Redick and Williams were but two pieces of a five man, blockbuster class that also included Michael Thompson, Shavlik Randolph, and Sean Dockery. The problem was that Thompson transferred, Dockery never developed, and Randolph bolted early for the NBA despite his own disappointing collegiate record. Meanwhile, K never bothered to develop any of his recruits from the three classes that followed, choosing instead to ride the Redick-Williams train as far as possible.

This was nothing unusual, mind you. Every year Duke’s team consists of five starters, perhaps one or two bench players, and a small mob of players who never remove their all black warm-up clothes. Directly related to the high transfer rate, (see blog part II), it is a direct product of (a) a spoils system that K has in place for his players and (b) K’s selfish ego, more on that later.

Wow, that was a hell of a rant. I give the author credit for being specific, but I completely disagree. Maybe Coach K is overrated, but he's still a great college basketball coach in my opinion.
