I wouldn't mind a dedicated returner, but I just don't know if it would make a difference until the blocking gets fixed. On that note, I think it would be great if the team could make a commitment to 5-6 players who can backup a regular position, but form the core of the special teams blocking & coverage units for the next 2-3 seasons.

I hear you. I've met a fair share of people down here in SEC country that actually believe that, so its tough to tell sometimes. A few of those guys could step into NFL teams right now and be an upgrade, but the guys that couldn't, well any OC would pick them apart like a perfectly cooked piece of pork.

I don't understand drafting a WR, we don't have a problem moving the ball in the pass game. We need to go defense in the 1st round. Another end to go with Johnson would be nice if there is no DT worth a 1st. After last week I wouldn't mind drafting a kicker, in a late round.

Teams who draft based on positional need early in the first round are the ones who keep having high first round picks.

if i knew that beason would be able to come back completely from an injury that has hobbled other players i'd be 100% behind your thinking on it. that said, i'd be surprised if we wait until 5 or 6. 1st round, 6-10, no. unless...unless..somehow that is the bpa. that late though, i'm inclined to disagree.

on 1 hand i'd say a dedicated return guy is something of a thing of the past. either way though, not buying the value of a returner that high in the draft as well.

It doesn't matter. You've got so much money tied up in Beason that unless you cut him, he's going to keep starting. The only open spot will be ROLB, and you don't take one of those high in the first round.

if you can significantly upgrade any spot where you don't have a star, which includes #2 WR, you have to consider that. Not only would you build from strength, but you give that inevitable replacement for Steve Smith down the road (I guess, you only have that guy for max of five years). Otherwise, a young WR is a waste, we don't have the ability to play some of the ones we have (whether they necessarily deserve it is another situation, though), and yeah, it's tough to overload on offense.

OT, you have Otah for another year in theory and you have Bell on roster, so you don't "need" a Kalil first round. While we're on little brothers, Mitchell Schwartz makes for a solid prospect for 3rd round or so, and honestly if I had my way I'd re-sign Schwartz himself and plug him back in at RG/RT as needed.

So, really, depending on who falls, it'd be nicer to have the 2nd or 3rd overall prospect possibly, over taking the 10th prospect at 6 because he plays Position X. Even corner, to go with WR, I'd consider with the first round but quite possibly not after 1. You could debate whether you "need" an OT given that you can find cheap depth and have some level of youth.

Dre Kirkpatrick is the most talented player available, but he'll probably score single digits on his Wonderlic. The Bengals, however, will not be bothered by that.

Then again, you don't have to be smart to play corner.
