Retail flyers hint at mid-August price drop for Xbox 360

The tale of the PlayStation 3 price drop was one that spanned quite a long period of time. Rumors had been circulating since shortly after the system release, but about three weeks before the actual announcement, a bevy of more credible rumors came about and were subsequently denied. Leaked ads then began to hit the Net, which ultimately confirmed what became the inevitable: a $100 drop to the PS3's 60 GB SKU.

Like the PlayStation 3 before it, the Xbox 360 is now going through the motions of pre-announcement price drop sleuthing. First, there was the long-running speculation. Then, reports began to trickle in last week from various "unnamed sources," but nothing seemed concrete enough to make the story worth posting. Now, various ads have begun to make their way onto the tubes via CheapAssGamer, who have uncovered two different ads showing the Xbox 360 at a new price of $349—titled a $50 "price break."

According to one of the ads from Toys 'R Us, the price drop is set to take place on August 13, 2008, which is just a day before the release of Madden 2008 and a few days before the release of Blue Dragon—two of the significant releases for the month of August. This falls in line with the predictions from last week.

As was the case with the Sony, Microsoft has continually deferred questions of a price drop, remarking with the textbook "we have no current plans." Given the accuracy of the past prediction, though, it seems very likely that we'll be seeing a price drop for the Xbox 360 in just a few days; a move that would compliment nicely the recent reduction and promotion of the HD-DVD player. Whether or not this is a timed promotion or a full-blown price drop is unknown. We'll be sure to update you on the story the moment an official announcement becomes available.
