    Men's Basketball Schedule Now Available

The Tar Heels will play at least 10 games against 2005 NCAA Tournament teams in 2005-06.

    Aug. 23, 2005

CHAPEL HILL - The Atlantic Coast Conference released its 2005-06 men's basketball schedule on Tuesday afternoon, and the University of North Carolina will open its defense of the 2005 NCAA championship when it hosts Gardner-Webb on Nov. 19 in Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels will play at least 10 games in 2005-06 against teams that earned bids to the 2005 NCAA Tournament, including matchups against ACC foes Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech, NC State and Wake Forest and non-conference opponents Arizona, Kentucky and Illinois. Boston College will be joining the ACC as the conference's 12th team this season.

In Atlantic Coast Conference play, Carolina will play Virginia, Maryland, Duke, NC State and Miami twice each in home-and-home series. UNC will play Boston College (home), Clemson (home), Florida State (away), Georgia Tech (home), Virginia Tech (away) and Wake Forest (away) once apiece.

One highlight of the schedule will be a rematch with Illinois in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 29 in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels defeated the Fighting Illini, 75-70, in the 2005 NCAA championship game in St. Louis. The two teams have split two previous meetings in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, with Carolina winning in Greensboro, N.C., in 2003-04 and Illinois winning in Champaign, Ill., in 2002-03.

Carolina also will play an early-season, non-conference game at Kentucky on Dec. 3. The Tar Heels defeated the Wildcats last year in Chapel Hill but lost in Lexington, Ky., in 2001-02 and 2003-04.

At least 25 of 27 Carolina games will be televised in 2005-06, including all 16 conference games. The Tar Heels will play at least 17 games on national television, not including ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament contests. Carolina will have 10 games nationally televised by ESPN/ESPN2, four by Fox Sports Net, two by CBS and one by ABC.

UNC will play Fayetteville State and Catawba in exhibition games in the Smith Center on Nov. 4 and 12, respectively. There will be no Blue-White game this season. "Late Night with Roy Williams and the Tar Heels," the squad's opening practice, will be held on Friday, Oct. 14

Sweet, Duke plays in the Pre-season NIT

DURHAM, N.C. — The 2005-06 Duke men's basketball schedule was announced on Tuesday as the Atlantic Coast Conference released the men's schedules of all 12 member institutions.

The Blue Devils, who return 10 letterwinners and three starters from last year’s team, face another demanding schedule in 2005-06. Duke opens the season at home on Nov. 14 against Boston University in the Preseason National Invitation Tournament. Joining the Blue Devils in the Preseason NIT are Alabama, Army, Drexel, Manhattan, Miami [Ohio], Memphis, Missouri, New Mexico State, Princeton, Sam Houston State, Seton Hall, Temple, UCLA and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Duke’s non-conference schedule features with games versus Davidson, Indiana (ACC/Big Ten Challenge), Pennsylvania, Texas, Valparaiso, St. John’s, UNC Greensboro, Bucknell, Georgetown and Temple.

Duke will again have a full slate of television contests, with 28 regular season games (30 if the Blue Devils advance to the finals of the Preseason NIT) scheduled to be aired on either national or regional television. Including the ACC Tournament, the Blue Devils will appear on national television at least 26 times this season on ABC, CBS, ESPN, espn2 and FSN (Fox Sports Net). Raycom/JP Sports will broadcast three Duke games — Dec. 31 vs. UNC Greensboro (RJ), Feb. 7 vs. North Carolina (RJ - game will also be aired nationally on ESPN) and Feb. 14 vs. Wake Forest (RJ) — to regional television audiences. Duke’s Feb. 4 showdown with Florida State will also be shown regionally on RSN (Regional Sports Networks).

In addition to its non-conference schedule, Duke will face another rigorous ACC slate in 2005-06, a season that will include Boston College as a full-time member of the league for the first time. Duke has won six ACC regular season championships in the past nine years, compiling an impressive 119-25 league record during that span, and six of the last seven ACC Tournament titles.

They are going to be pretty good. I think some preseason rankings have them in the Top 20.
