    Funny thing...

Wouldn't you think any aspiring OC in his right mind would jump at the chance to come to Carolina right now considering we got the killer Defense now, and that we'd be spending money/ drafting Offensive players almost totally this off-season.
Knowing we'd be starting from scratch, virtually, with a great deal of input building an O to his liking, without having to vye for 'position' in the draft and cap with the defensive coordinator?

Sounds like a dream job for an OC to me.

We also never really attempted to use half of it to its strengths. I'm not syaing Henning's departure will make things rosy, but we'll actually try on third down, we'll be less predictable,we'll run more variations, no matter who is in here.

you're assuming that coach fox doesnt have ANY input in playcalling. i cant make that assumption. :)

he might suggest calls like the draws, but would he intentionally say "no screens"? Would he say "let's call that play twice in a row"?

i shoulda specified my comment in that it was directed towards 3rd down philosophy.

certainly, he had some input there. With better players, that probably wouldn't happen as much to a conservative coach, but it's stupid IMO to do that anyway. When the John Fox regime eventually loses steam, things like that will be why he'd get fired.

Still, that's deliberate. Why we don't do half the things any other NFL team would do, including Dallas who has less talent than we do despite having good receivers, is a little baffling.

Either way, I'd imagine that we're going to have to wait for the Giants to lose to know what's going on. And either way, I'll live with it. I'd like to keep Henning and bring Payton on as QBs coach - I don't want either man to be both positions.

I had some issues with play calling at times, but I was encouraged that it did improve somewhat as the year progressed...not that it was great, but where there is improvement, there is hope. I do believe we will see a more efficient offense next year. We'll still be a ball control, deliberate, conservative offense, but with the expected infusion of "O" talent I don't think we will be quite as defensive in the play calling.

I'll second this. We definitely need someone who can work exclusively with QB's. And no matter how much knowledge Henning has, he cannot dedicate his attention to the QB's like they need while running the entire offense at the same time. Besides even if Henning turns this offense into a solid unit next season and everyone is happy, we cannot expect him to hang around for more than another year or two anyway. So, I like the idea of having Payton already on staff ready to step up when the time comes.
