    Panthers' Smith suspended by team

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith was suspended Wednesday by the Panthers for fighting with a teammate during a team meeting.

Coach John Fox said Smith and receiver Anthony Bright had an "altercation'' during Monday's meeting.

Smith will miss Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Smith, an All-Pro kick returner as a rookie last season, has 36 catches for 534 yards and two touchdowns this year.

Okay, I think it's safe to say now that the team is officially self-destructing. :(

Its time to clean house at WR, (maybe keep Moose - IF he can remain injury free the rest of the season, if not - buh bye).

Can we please cut everyone on this team and just start over?

I wouldn't go that far, LB. There are some good players on this team, but it's beginning to look like the Richardsons might need to jack up the radiator cap and install a new car underneath it.

I am in full agreement with Sand, though. We do need to clean house at WR, maybe as much as they cleaned house at CB last offseason.

Byrd needs to go. Steve Smith is no better than a #3 guy. Moose is making me believe that 1999 was the exception, rather than the rule. He's not a Pro Bowl receiver. He was a product of a very good system by Gil Haskell. He's made a play about what, once every three games this year? That ain't gonna cut it as a #1 WR. Maybe #2, but definitely not #1.

Hankton, IMO needs to go or be converted to a position that doesn't have to catch. The man can play ST, but he's got no hands. CB maybe? He's supposed to have speed, and I guess he can tackle.

Looks like Bright's time is running out. With SS's suspension, he'll get another shot this weekend, but his star is definitely fading fast. He probably needs to go.

We've got a couple of guys on IR, but I'm not expecting much from them.

Nope, getting Peete (or whomever) some new targets could really be a boost to this offense. I'm betting the Panthers' WR corps will look very different come next season.

Does anybody know when we must update/re do #87's contract? I'd pay him the going rate for a #2 receiver, if he does not like it he can move on. I don't know what his problem is but I think a lot of his production is "selective".

I just hope we don't throw a bunch of money at him if it is do anytime soon.

Someone will have to look this up, but I think he's already had the blockbuster contract he signed in 2000 adjusted at least once. Depending on how the current contract is structured, I'd talk him down to #2 money plus incentives or trade/release him.

    first things first....

Get an injury settlement with Gilbert done. It'll free up more cap room than simply cutting him and still being on the hook for his pro-rated bonus. We may be looking at replacing all the skill players on offense.

Moose needs to go period as does Smith. Moose made an ass of himself last year with the decoy episode and further deminished himself with the gun and drug charges this preseason. He's beginning to become a cancer if he already hasn't become one. He basically dumped on Weinke for last year like the rest of the gutless bastards on the team, not taking any part of the blame. Great teammates to have, I'd say. And they wonder why Weinke has the attitude he does.

We are going to need one if not two QB's (2 FA's or 1 FA and draft pick), two, maybe three competent WR, a FB, a TE or two (if Walls retires), and alternative at RB should Foster not be able to overcome his injury. Obviously we'll need an OT to take Terry's spot and we should look to improve at OG.

Anybody thinking this isn't going to take another two years to have all the pieces in place is simply fooling themselves and buying into the early season hype from this year that has long ago evaporated.
