Grand Opening Weekend Activities Announced For Charlotte Bobcats Arena

October 10, 2005 - The City of Charlotte and the Charlotte Bobcats organization today announced plans for the Charlotte Bobcats Arena grand opening weekend October 20-23, 2005, including a ceremonial ribbon cutting, The Rolling Stones performing in the arena’s first-ever event and two public Bobcats Open House events, presented by The Charlotte Observer.

“The grand opening of Charlotte Bobcats Arena is a milestone moment for the City of Charlotte,” said Pat McCrory, mayor of the City of Charlotte, which broke ground for the new arena in July, 2003. “We are proud to open the doors to the building that helped bring the NBA back to our community and that will give our city an opportunity for tremendous entertainment options and economic growth.“

Opening day activities on Friday, October 21 include pre-concert entertainment on the outdoor plaza stage at the arena’s Trade Street plaza entrance. The event is open to the public and begins at 5:00 p.m. The arena also will hold an official countdown to the 6:00 p.m. opening of the arena doors for The Rolling Stones concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m.; only Rolling Stones ticket holders may enter the arena on Friday night.

Doors open to the general public on Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23, 2005 with Bobcats Open House events from 2:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. The free open house events will feature a raffle where guests can enter to win an arena season pass - tickets to every event in the arena for a year - as well as live entertainment and self-guided tours. Visitors will receive a navigation map highlighting must-see areas and amenities and will be able to take a peek backstage and in the team locker rooms on behind the scenes guided tours. Charlotte Bobcats Arena staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide additional information.

The Bobcats Open House events will feature the best opportunity for fans to purchase Bobcats ticket packages and sample available seats. One-of-a-kind autographed items signed by Bobcats players will be provided to fans who purchase ticket packages during the open houses.

“We are excited to open Charlotte Bobcats Arena with a series of memorable events that will enable the Charlotte community to experience the arena first hand and capture the essence of its diverse entertainment offerings,” said Ed Tapscott, president and COO of the Charlotte Bobcats Organization, which will join the City of Charlotte and launch the grand opening weekend activities in a ceremonial ribbon cutting on the arena plaza on Thursday, October 20. “We are also looking forward to celebrating the spirit of cooperation that brought together the City of Charlotte and civic and business leaders to complete the task of building this incredible new arena.”

The grand opening festivities continue over the next two weeks with a black tie charitable gala and home openers for the Charlotte Bobcats and the Charlotte Checkers. The Bobcats Jump Ball will be held at Charlotte Bobcats Arena on Saturday, October 29 at 6 p.m. The black-tie event benefits the Bobcats Charitable Foundation and features gourmet food prepared by event sponsor and arena concessionaire Levy Restaurants, a special tribute to the community spirit of Charlotte and the players and coaches of the 2005-2006 Bobcats.

The grand opening festivities conclude on the first weekend of November when the Bobcats play their home opener against the Boston Celtics at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2005 and the Charlotte Checkers host the Greenville Grrrowl in their home opener at 5:05 p.m. Sunday, November 6, 2005. Charlotte Bobcats Arena, opening October 21, 2005, is located in the heart of Uptown Charlotte and will be home to the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats, WNBA’s Charlotte Sting, and ECHL’s Charlotte Checkers. The state-of-the-art arena will host more than 125 events a year including sports, concerts and family entertainment. In addition to the October 21 Rolling Stones concert, the Bobcats home season which tips off on November 5 and the Checkers home season which begins November 6, the arena has announced shows and performances by Elton John (November 12), National Arenacross Series (November 18-20), Disney on Ice: Princess Classics (November 30-December 4), Mannheim Steamroller (December 11), U2 (December 12), Dolly Parton (December 15), Clay Aiken Christmas (December 21), Bill and Gloria Gaither Jubilate (December 31), USHRA Monster Jam (January 6 and 7), Bon Jovi (January 18), CIAA Basketball Tournament (February 27 – March 4) and the Harlem Globetrotters (March 25).
