I love BBQ (I cook my own) and wherever I go I try to sample the local fare. Even though I am admittedly biased towards NC 'cue, I try to be open minded.

Yesterday while in Columbia on business we ate lunch at Maurices. For those that don't know, SC-style 'cue is mustard-based sauce.

Review - it was ok, not much to crow about in my opinion. I liked the BBQ hash, but was taken aback a little after I asked the waitress what it was. She said "BBQ hash - do you want me to tell you what's in it?" Uhh, do I want to know?:yikes:

We also ordered fried pig skins. I tried one bite and then noticed that on one piece of skin, you could still see pig hairs sticking out of it. Needless to say, the one bite was all I had.

The place was empty at 12:00, and I thought that was strange for a local legend. Maybe it was an off day, or maybe that means something else, I don't know.

Actually, Shealy's is in Batesburg. It's quite a drive but worth it. Far better than Maurice's IMO....and, they don't sell slavery propaganda.

Didn't Maurice run for Govenor of SC back in 1972? A few years back I remeber seeing a photo of him riding on a horse in downtown Columbia promoting his bid. Didn't he have a falling out with USC a few years ago (he is no longer one of their sponsors). Something about him still using the Confederate Flag in his advertising/on his bbq sauce/or something like that  . . .
