Tony Pike is as good a option as anything in the draft, plus why waste the pick on a player that's going to be on the bench all season anyway

There are no draft guarantees. That said, there isn't an elite QB in the draft so why not take a known commodity at a need position.

you expect newton to stay in carolina for long? He would not, especially once he started living up to the hype (IF he does) Bus Cook would convince him to run with his guaranteed carolina money right out the door to a higher profile big market team and get that second huge payday as soon as possible

    Dareus isn't a guarantee, either.

    This.

Far from it, as a matter of fact.

Yes I do. I would be surprised if the franchise tag goes away with the new CBA. I didn't say Newton either, I just said a qb. Newton is who I personally like more based on what I've seen, but if the staff feels strongly that Gabbert is better based on their evaluations, then I would accept that. They do this for a living, I'm just a EE who is a Panther geek. :p

almost all the other picks do give an initial return on investment, sure. With the possibility that the #1 overall pick will be signed for four years, it's tougher spending 50% of that on the bench.

which, it isn't a matter of "do you want a QB? Sure, pick one then." A lot of teams bust because of that. What I stated was, "you're choosing between the QB and the others." If the QB is as good, scarcity might suggest you solve it. I don't think that Newton is as good. Just a few weeks ago he was falling, then teams started talking about taking him at 5 and now he's a #1 overall again.

To go back to TBW's statement, not taking a QB #1 overall because he's not your right guy? That doesn't solve your QB situation, sure. I don't think you solve it taking a random guy either.

either you or Purr, or both, tell me all about the downside about the guy, then.

If they take a quarterback, its because the staff, or at least a majority of the staff including the coach, love him. If you aren't sure he's "your guy," then its stupid to take a quarterback #1 overall.

Its the first question. Do we love the QB. If we don't, then we find someone at another position we do. Or trade down.

    100%.

Which I hate. I'm not the "we need a QB #1 overall" guy.
