I'd say when and if they are ever successful it would be a blow to most people's belief system.

I'll cross the bridge if it ever actually occurs.

After doing a little thought in this I have this to say.

There are thousands of people in the world who could paint the Mona Lisa right now and, now that the blue prints exist, countless others who could build the buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

It is not surprising that people can take an existing blue print and copy it.

It wouldn't take just the creation of life to surprise me but the creation of something we have never seen before.

Anyone can copy....it is the creation of something from nothing that is truly the miracle.

Also, the spontaneous creation of life would be far more shocking.

From what I've read, they aren't trying to copy anything. They're trying to put together the basic elements and let evolution take over. I think it would depend more on what you believe started life in the universe. At least the life we know on Earth.

But they are trying to create carbon based life. They have the blueprint for the basic elements.

If you want to impress me create silicon based life, and I am not talking about the kind found in LA.

When scientist create something out of nothing then I will be impressed. Do you consider planting a seed that eventually grows into a plant to be creating life? Is what they are doing that much different?

Actually. it is. Put the atoms together to make a plant and then you can see where they are going. We manipulate solid compounds everyday. Now if they can manipulate solid compounds and make them 'live'. That is something.

They are still not creating life from nothing. In fact they can not create anything they simply re-arrange what was already there.
