Were you the one at the Lair touting Buddy Guy? We need to talk some if so.

The thread was started by Water Boy talking about Danny Wilson then moved on to a discussion about 'influences'. Water Boy 'touted' Buddy Guy because he used to live in Chicago and often went to Buddy's 'Legends' club. I got involved at this point because I was going to Chicago on vacation, and asked a lot of touristy questions. I bought the 'As Good As It Gets' CD because of that thread and play it once in a while. I'm not a great fan, but I like listening to Bluesy stuff now and then. If we conversed about the blues in general or Buddy Guy in particular, I'm afraid the conversation would be very one-sided!

I'm readily a novice of most of the blues and Buddy Guy as well. I'll be honest I didn't enjoy him much in concert, but part of that was because I was expecting someone different rather than him again. So it'll probably be a no-side conversation :D

Let's not stray into unknown territory then. Someone more knowledgable will step in and make us look foolish! I have a few 'collection' CDs with great stuff by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James and many more, but I'm no expert. My first hearing of the blues was through 'white' British bands: early Fleetwood Mac (before them damn Americans joined!), John Mayall, Rory Gallagher and (one of my favourites) The Groundhogs. Then came the Americans like Johnny Winter, Robert Cray, etc. The blues purists would regard me as a new kid on the block (if you excuse the reference!).

Check out Jimmy Reed from Missisippi if you want to see where some of the boys got their inspiration.
I am in the process of finishing up some J Reed CDs if you want me to mail some--just holler. J Reed moved from Miss. to Chicago to make music and is a lot different than Irish jazz like Rory.

Robert Cray rocks. He was the (final) opener for B.B. King the first time I saw him (along with Tower of Power, admittedly not a blues act, and the Jay Geils band "Bluestime", co-fronted by Magic Dick).

Buddy Guy puts together a good concert but he's too showy and rock oriented now. Susan Tedeschi's like the third porridge - just right.
