Had some free time this afternoon and decided to kill it in CompUSA. Spent some time checking out Mac's...never really spent any time looking at them before...have to say....was VERY impressed with the screens and ease of use (played around with making a video and burning a DVD)....VERY VERY easy!!!!

Any thoughts on Macs out there???

Macs are great if you can find the software you need. Digital artists are pretty much their target audience because of this (great programs for such use).

Macs are good learning computers for young kids... great FIRST computer before they move on to a PC... and like it was said earlier Mac is the computer of choice for artists... outperforms the PC when creating digital audio, video, and graphic design

That is statement is apple progaganda. The difference is largely negligible. Pc's max out with much greater system resources than macs. while macs perform better when comparing systems of seemingly equal resources. Pc's generate so much more horsepower for so much less cost that apple is getting blown away. The printing industry is changing to pc's.

    *cough*BULLSHIT*cough*

I'm a graphic artist in the printing industry, 20+ years, and there are a few people who think they can do the same on pcs, but after they get started and time comes to get serious, they make the move to Macs. Macs rule.

And don't go by the processor speed pc advertises, it's inflated numbers. Macs are faster.

I work on both, as I've clearly stated in the past, a 500mhz Mac will walk all over a 1ghz pc anyday. And don't forget to figure into production over the course of the day (and multiply that by the days in a year) the loss time spent booting your pc, re-installing your software, trouble shooting drivers, scanning for viruses, playing with your DOS, booting off your floppies, trying to get your disk to mount, trying to get the font to work or print, converting your Publisher97, 2000, 2002, word doc, PowerPoint or whatever to a program that can actually print in CMYK, getting past your illegal command, installing multiple printers on network, or even getting connected to a network, fixing the card or CD device that used to work but no longer does because you added something else to your computer that is standard equipment on a mac, or whatever other fucking problem like the ones I read in this forum day in and day out, which you'll never hear me bitch about because my computer fucking works.

I will say that XP is pretty cool though, not having to actually restart everytime you install something, but if you haven't seen OS X, then I guess what you don't know about what your missing won't hurt you.

You can't seriously be saying your Mac is flawless... I've seen just as many BOMB icons on a Mac as I have blue screens or illegal operations or whatever on a PC. It's just that the PC doesn't put a nice icon on the "you're hosed" screen... Which all those lovely artistic Mac users just love.

I've seen a LOT of publishing houses switch to Windows - I'll argue with the 500mhz Mac = 1ghz PC (that's not the whole equation), but if that Mac costs 50% more, I can get a PC that's 4x as fast for the same cost as the Mac, and run circles around the Mac... You pay more because Apple insists on keeping the architecture closed and single-sourced. It's economics 101.

All that said, the Mac is still a nice piece of machinery and software. Gotta give props where deserved.
