By the way Jazz, dunno where you live, but if you live in Charlotte or another major metro, test drive the mini. They have them at the South Park mall Apple store.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but I'd probably get the 1.4Ghz & 80GB HD, with a ram upgrade too, if you can afford it. Pickup a solid 17" LCD & a mouse/keyboard combo from Newegg, and you'll have a fun little machine thats capable of doing InDesign stuff. It will not play Unreal Tourney or Doom3, etc.

I priced the Macs. If I get one it'll be one of the Minis. And, part of the charm is it doesn't come w/keyboard & monitor, I can use what I have(nice brand new 17" flat screen), hopefully.

I'm over in Cumb Co. Nobody has one in house, only online. If they did, I probably couldn't test it w/dialup :) anyhow.

Re: boosting RAM ~ After getting the Mini, find the RAM using the schematic, then replacing it myself. Is that feasible? [Assuming directions come with the new RAM.] I've replaced modems.

Pay for them to do it. Don't open the case and void your warranty.

I just found out that the MacMini's RAM can be expanded/replaced to 1GB(possibly 2GB if it has two slots).

My question is: As far as you know, are there any detriments to boosting the RAM to 1GB; to 2GB? [Also, do you think it's a waste of money to boost it to 2GB if all I'm going to do is surf the net (and maybe add a music editing feature down the road, but that's another story...)?]

I can order through BestBuy; there isn't an Apple store locally.

    [I don't know why I'm still fixated on this machine. :( ]

    Thanks.

I know this ambiguous, but how's a good way to determine 'when better reaches a saturation point/overkill?' As I've stated my use of the computer is mainly surfing the net(no sophisticated games), and possibly adding a music editing feature.
Also, how do I know a computer has the capability to accept that feature?

Salesman at BestBuy seem to be honest with their info. But sometimes what's not said is important.

I don't know OSX that well, but I doubt it's detrimental (except to your wallet). Overkill - yes, but Detrimental, no.

FYI - I have 2GB of PC3200 in my windows machine, but then, I'm a dorkwad Battlefield 2 player.

Buy a new one. They're only $400-$500. By the time the warranty dies, he'll be ready for a new one anyway.
