Charlotte, N.C. -- Charlotte 49ers Director of Athletics Judy Rose, today, announced that head men's basketball coach Bobby Lutz signed a one-year contract extension that will lengthen his contract to include the 2008-09 basketball season.
"I'm extremely pleased that Bobby is so committed to Charlotte," said Rose. "I believe he is one of the best coaches in the country and the 49ers are fortunate to have his long-term commitment. He continually makes us proud with the way he and his team represent the university."
"I am excited about the future of Charlotte basketball," Lutz said. "I'm thankful for the continued support and commitment shown me by the university and, in particular, Chancellor (James) Woodward and Judy."
In five years as head coach, Lutz has led the 49ers to post-season play, four times, including NCAA Tournament trips in 1999, 2001 and 2002. The 49ers captured Conference USA Tournament titles in 1999 and 2001, advancing to the second round of the NCAAs in both seasons. In his five seasons, Lutz has produced a 93-66 record, for a .585 winning pct.. Of note, the 49ers strength of schedule regularly ranks among the nation's best, including three seasons with a slate ranked #33 or better. Lutz' win-loss record includes a 52-14 mark at home in Halton Arena.
This past year, Lutz was named the "Best Bench Coach" in Conference USA by every pre-season publication that had such a category.
"Bobby has elevated our program and continues to put us in contention in one of the strongest basketball leagues around," Rose added. "And, obviously, we are confident that he will continue to do so."
With his seventh win in the upcoming season, Lutz will become just the second head coach to record 100 wins for the 49ers. Lutz is already the program's second winningest coach, trailing Jeff Mullins, who produced a 182-142 record from 1985-1996.
The length of the contract will now carry Lutz through his 11th year as 49ers head coach, which will match Mullins for the longest tenure at the 49ers helm. In addition, Lutz served as an assistant coach for three years, initially joining Mullins' staff in 1995-96. A 1980 high honors graduate of the university, Lutz spent four years at the school as a student.

Lutz signed a six-year extension in 2002 to extend his contract through 2008. The one-year extension now takes Lutz through 2009.

Wouldn't it be great to have a job in which you made $500,000 a year, even when your performance was less than adequate?

Wouldn't be even greater when they would give you a guaranteed contract so they have to pay you if they fire you?

And even better, they give you a contract extension after a crap year.

    Wow!
