Lutz was also mentioned in an "adult magazine"....too bad they were talking about his crappy porn-stache instead of his coaching "skills".

An outstanding program put on by High Point University tonight. The food was first rate, only Michelob products, a meat buffet of salmon, chicken, roast beef and turkey. Bobby's foursome of Billy Packer, Dave Odom, Tubby Smith and Lutz won the golf tournament with a 59 but couldn't take home the prizes since they had not paid to play in the tournament. Bobby and the 49ers carried some clout, an autographed Lutz bobblehead went for $40 and a team-signed basketball went for $120, which is more than any of the 5 balls signed by the celebrities brought! (No, I wasn't bidding on them either.) NAIA Hall of Fame coach Jack Jensen (Guilford) was there, as was the everlasting Skeeter Francis of WFU/ACC fame, Sal Bando of the Oakland A's, Skip Prosser and Ron Wellman from Wake Forest. Wake's 1962 Final Four team attended and many HPU players returned. Charlotte was represented well besides Lutz and myself :D... former assistant Lane Odom (a HPU grad) came, I met for the first time, UNCC's first D-I coach, Bill Foster and I had the opportunity to eat with the ever-famous Pino Pipes, who transferred to HPU from Charlotte. Lane will get another shot in coaching sooner than later. Speeches were given honoring Steele by Packer, Lutz, Pat Williams (a fantastic speaker), Odom, M.L. Carr and Tubby. Tubby has changed little from his days when I knew him as the bottom assistant at VCU, when he came to Charlotte almost weekly to scout Sun Belt teams, very humble and likable. Bobby's speech talked of 7 things Coach Steele had taught him by coaching against him and in personal talks. Steele had told him that if you had a senior player, who had stuck with the program, often after they'd hit bottom, that player would come back to help the team. Lutz mentioned this had been the case with Butter Johnson on this season's squad. He also mentioned losing to Steele the first 8 times he coached against him at Pfeiffer and how the adminstration only wanted him to defeat the Panthers. Of course, Steele got the final laugh, saying Bobby was a stomping hothead on the bench, but ended up beating HP the final 8 times they faced each other.

It was a grand night for a grand couple.
