occassionally, I get this weird feeling in the back of my throat, like there is something lodged there...after a couple of hearty hacks, it comes up a little more, and I can work it all the way out of my mouth. Once it gets out, it has the same consistency as maybe a piece of corn or some wet skin.

It's a pasty white color and solid, but I can smash it, almost like a blackhead or solid pimple matter.

It's not the matter that scares me, it's the frequency at which it occurs. And being that I am a pretty heavy smoker, there's always that concern in the back of my mind that something is going screwy with my lungs.

I can only describe it as solid porous chunks. As hard as it will be to resist semen jokes here, please refrain. This is serious, and Im hoping someone can ease the concern.

    TIA
    -Nick

Monkey, during my 5.5 years of 1-2 packs a day smoking, this happened to me twice. It's exactly as you describe it, so I'm sure it's the same. I asked a nurse one time if it was lung matter, she said if it was anything from the lungs, it would be pink and that it was likely just old mucus that had been stuck somewhere between lung and throat for a while. I don't know if it's related or not, but it hasn't happened since I quit smoking in January of 2004.

    gotta love the internet.....http://www.tonsilstones.com/

    Tonsil Stones

Tonsil Stones are irregularly shaped, whitish/yellow, foul-smelling globs of mucous and bacteria that get caught in the back of the throat. They form in the tonsil crypts which are simply small pockets or divots that appear in everyones tonsils. The scientific name for these white globs is tonsilloliths.

Here is the specific method I used to get rid of my tonsil stones

It is only recently, that the oral care community has begun to understand what these white spots actually are - many people have reported that their dentist told them that they were actually just extra food debris - this is not true!

Tonsil Stones don't do any physical harm, and sporadically coughing them up doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with you. However they can be annoying (who wants to cough one up when they are kissing someone!), and sometimes they are an indication that you have bad breath.

If you have ever broken open one of those white tonsilloliths, then you know that they smell absolutely terrible! What you are smelling is actually a combination of volatile sulfur compounds(Methyl Mercaptan and Hydrogen Sulfide), post nasal drip, and bacteria (no wonder it smells so bad!)

Yes, this sounds exactly like what they are. Can anyone find any pictures? I suppose I could take one of the next one that comes up. :satana:
