So I am on the low carb diet. I have lost ten pounds in two weeks. My little strips that you piss on are turning purple. Anyone else do this diet? I wonder if the weight loss will continue or come to a dramatic halt next week.

The strips let you know if you are in "ketosis" which is the fat burning stage. If they turn color you know the diet is working, even if you are not seeing it on the scales.

The cravings have not been too bad this time. I have tried this diet before but failed to stick with it more than a week or so but this time I am doing better. Some of the low carb goodies they have now help a lot. The Brier's low carb ice cream is actually pretty good stuff.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.... Changing the way your body produces energy can not be good. Your body does things a certain way for a reason.

I don't know anyone that went on a low-carb diet and kept the weight off. You drop a lot of weight fast, but EVERYONE I know that has done it has gained the weight back.

Why risk kidney damage and fucking your metabolism up if the weight loss is not permanent?

The key to success is once you drop the weight you want, you gradually add carbs back in until you find the amount your particular metabolism needs and keep at that or less. (easier said than done, granted, but no harder than maintaining any other dietary change) Good luck man...and keep at it.

Fred...have you read any literature about how this dietary change works?? It makes sense, physiologically, and only extereme versions of it cause health problems, but that's true for any extreme diet. I understand you are a medical professional, and I respect that....but I also know some doctors who believe in the low carbohydrate lifestyle....check out some of the non-sales literature. I also know some diabetics who do very, very well adapting to the low carb lifestyle.

I've tried low carbing a few times, first lost a lot of weight in the first week, but nothing thereafter and subsequent attempts have produced moderate success. I was prepared to stick with it (I quite like low carb) but my kidneys just couldn't hack it. I had chronic pain, discomfort and infections - so for me, it wasn't the go I was hoping for. Good luck Thelt and others...if you find something that you can do that gets the weight off and you can find some enjoyment in it - go for it :).

I've read a lot on it and taken care of people who have messed their kidneys up on it.

Do you know anyone who lost a large amount of weight and kept it off a year?

When you burn ketones, it is a sign that your body is in starvation mode; systems shut down, metabolism is thrown out of whack.... Why mess with the way your body produces energy? It's crazy.

Why not just make healthy dietary changes once & be done with it? I can understand the desire to drop weight quickly, but if it makes you sick & it doesn't last, what's the point in making yourself suffer?

I've know a lot of people who've done the low-carb diet, but not a single one of them actually felt good while they were on it. Some of them had serious health problems.

Everybody wants a quick fix, & diet gurus make tons of money selling them. Why not just eat smaller servings, & add some healthier foods to what you're eating? Americans "biggie-size" everything as a rule--our typical servings are way more than we need. If you scale back & add some stuff that's actually good for you, you'll be cutting out some junk without totally depriving yourself of things you enjoy. You'll lose weight slower, but you'll lose it. And you won't have to keep adjusting your diet over & over.

Doesn't this cause that yo-yo effect, too? Going into that starvation mode that causes your body to try to hang onto food & weight more tenaciously, so it gets harder & harder to lose it?
