    So, it's all about electromagnetism.

yeah, so what started that countdown? somebody said something about the doors locking so nobody could see who dropped the stuff off, which actually sounds somewhat reasonable as an explanation. sort of implies the lockdown won't happen again for a while.

yeah, i think the orientation film had some stuff about it too -- the island's unique magnetic features or something.

hans orstead, eh? that's interesting. another anagram or just an homage?

ever since the sixth sense got me, i tend to look for this angle in things. guess it's all part of being a skeptic.

i put electromagnetism in wikipedia. there was some stuff about hans orstead being incluenced by Immanuel Kant. some of the stuff in kant's wiki sounded a lot like what was goign on on the island.

remember when locke gave jack (or sayid) his compass? he said he didn't need it anymore. then sayid showed jack that it wasn't pointing north. i guess if there's a powerful enough electromagnetic field it would make a compass useless. oh, and all that static they get on the radios is probably electromagnetic interference.

    from the wiki:

...electromagnetic force is the one responsible for practically all the phenomena one encounters in daily life, with the exception of gravity. Roughly speaking, all the forces involved in interactions between atoms can be traced to the electromagnetic force acting on the electrically charged protons and electrons inside the atoms. This includes the forces we experience in "pushing" or "pulling" ordinary material objects, which come from the intermolecular forces between the individual molecules in our bodies and those in the objects. It also includes all forms of chemical phenomena, which arise from interactions between electron orbitals.
